An hour with the Digger

Active member
OK, so maybe I'm becoming a convert.Maybe.
Tonight I went out to a spot about 8 blocks from home. The houses were removed almost 2 years ago for the new elevated freeway. I pass it every day to and from work. I have seen MDers in there before.
This place is so loaded with trash, bits of siding, beer cans, you name it. I only had an hour so I was getting discouraged, then I moved into an area loaded with zincolns. The zincs were IDing anywhere from 32-38. I got a 38-40 and popped out a'54 rosie. Then a couple of wheats, and after a few more zincs got 4 wheats in one hole.
I'm still learning the ID numbers aren't really close to what the stock coil gives, but picking good coins out of tons of garbage is changing how I feel about this coil. Gotta go back soon and just try to pick out good signals regardless of the numbers. I think the MDers here before were cherry picking and that's good for me.

Nice finds. I agree with the numbers being a little off from what my other coils show and it is taking me some time to know what it is telling me as I am sure I rely on the number too much. I am pretty much using just the digger coil now just because I keep finding but maybe I am just too lazy to change coils all the time. :wiggle:

No, not lazy. Don't fix it if it ain't broke. These numbers aren't so far off, but they are different IDs, I need to pay close attention to the sounds and numbers like OLH gets for nickels. I may be missing some. I definitely know when I get a nickel with the stock coil. And, I played around with + and - GBs while searching a 5x5 area, that's when I got the wheats. I went over them before with a + GB and didn't pick them up.
My biggest issue right now is that even a beer can at 3" will give me a mid 30s number and sound like a coin, at least to me. I know there's a difference, I just Havent picked up on it yet.

That is good to know on the + or - GB. It does take quite awhile to cover much ground with the " Digger " but we can't have everything we want in one single coil.
I know I seem to be digging more bottle tops which if I remember right ( my memory is pretty bad ) were showing 46 sometimes. And the beer cans also which are in the 30-33 penny ID number area for me so I dig them. Guess it is better to dig anyway than take a chance of missing something good. I just need more time with my detector and I am sure after winter is over I will need relearn it over again.

When I said + & - GB, I mean going up or down from whatever the 705 automatically sets itself to. Just wanted to clarify that. It may not be the correct way to put it.

most places are never cleaned out. You just have to find that one lil area that most ppl have missed and it looks like you found that one small area,,,

Congrat's

Thanks Mark. I hope there's a couple more small missed areas. These lots aren't that old, but they are from the silver era, and close to home.

I knew what you were saying. Thanks

Thanks guys for keeping the information flowing. This forum is a never ending source of information and when I run through a period of time when I'm not able to MD much, it keeps me going to read the adventures and experiences of everyone else on this forum. I'm retiring the first of October and the plan is to remedy the time shortage!

Went back to the same small area of the lot this morning. About 30 minutes to hunt, had the same setting as the other night. Found 13 zincolns, 3 wheats, a metal car(not pictured) and a bracelet made of early 70's memorials.
Found that going slow between the holes I dug Tuesday night, there are still targets there.
I need to spend more time here since its so close to home. Not much chance of IHs or Barbers, but mercs are a possibility.

You are killing it with that " Digger " coil. Nice finds. I love having a close place to detect but I have pretty much cleaned out my close place. I still am the hunt for a IH and a merc along with lots of coins I haven't found YET.

You'll find them. Just have to be in the right spot. There are days when I feel like bagging the whole thing. it isnt anything like it used to be, you watch a video on Youtube and somebody there has a kitchen table covered in silver coins. 580+ silvers, 3000 wheats, hundreds of IHs that he got in 2012 and all from places that have been pounded hard or so he says. Guess he's never been to Spokane.
But, I enjoy this hobby so doggone much. The beeps drown out the voices in my head,:) and you just never know whats coming up next.
When you find one of the coins on your 'gotta find' list, please let us know, when I dont find anything I rely on you guys to keep me going.

Went out to the same spot again. The first pic shows the area I've been searching. It looks like holes all over, but its just disturbed dirt. It isnt a big area, maybe 15x20, not sure why theres so many coins in this spot, but who cares? Didn't find any silver but did get a 1911 wheat, another mid 40s wheat, 4 nickels, quarter, dime and a handful of memorials.
Also got a 1935 tax token and a James E. Pepper distillery token. Don't know the age of this token but the company was in business from 1780-1916, so it must have some age to it.
As I get this area cleaned up I start hearing more signals in amongst the trash. There may not be much more for silver, but this is great for learning the Digger coil.
It is amazing how small of a foot print this coil has. It seems that even a 2-3 inch overlap may be too much.

Again nice finds. You found a supermarket of treasure in that small plot.
Thanks for sharing.

Nice job.
Patience is the key.
Keep swinging and the silver will come.
If there's silver at your spot, you will find it. Its doubtful, that with all those Wheaties still in there, that someone else beat you to the silver.
The best finds usually come when you are not expecting it.
Keep hitting that spot, and after a few more hunts there, you'll be asking yourself, "How did I miss THAT the last ten times I was here???"

Most of all,
HAVE FUN!!!!

Cheers,

Bik

If I can figure out where the rest of the yards were, I'll hit them, good chance of silver there. There used to be 2 houses on this lot, but one of them was used for SWAT practice for a while so the yard is loaded with little paintball bullet casings. If I can get a lock on their ID, I may be able to work around them. A lot of the trash in these yards might be why the other MDers have left so much behind. This 705 is great for getting through it all, and I am really starting to like the Digger coil.
Thanks for the comment, BiK, if I find more out of this lot I'll post it here. If anybody's interested.

Always interested in other MDers :twodetecting: finds so keep them coming. I am from SW Montana near Butte but live in Anaconda, Mt. My area is a EPA super fund site and many home yards and miles of surrounding open ground have been taken down 4 - 6 inches and new soil brought in so tons of places are gone to MDing. :nopity:
