I got home from Church at 6:15 pm and had a couple of hours of daylight to hunt. I went back to the pasture on our place here in Mississippi where I found a Spanish 1 bit piece and a 1/2 Real earlier this year. I had found a couple of flat buttons and it had gotten dark so I headed back to the truck, hunting as I walked along. I got a high tone showing 12-38 at 6" deep. I stopped, turned on my flashlight and checked out the signal. It was solid 2 ways and a little iffy at 90 degrees. Good enough to dig though. After the plug was out, I located it in the side of the hole with my Sunray probe. One scoop out of the side with my Lesche and I could see what I thought was the top of a Tombac button sitting exactly vertical in the side of the hole (I have found several Tombacs at this site this year). After I got it out I could see what I had. A 1785 (1783?) 1/2 Real minted in Mexico City. The oldest coin I've ever found and the only one from the 18th century .
It is badly worn, paper thin, and scuffed up but I couldn't be happier if it was in mint condition. This is the third 1/2 Real I have found this year. The Etrac is one fine metal detector.
