Any clue what this is?

Found while hunting a old house site. I have no idea it is brass note the hole by the handle. The handle as call it appears to be distorted.

Due to the hole in it, I can only think it is for a specific pre-measured liquid - excess amount runs out the hole. Unless the hole was for a rivet to secure it to something, but then there would be two holes. I would be interested in finding out whatever it is though.

An old brass candle snuffer ??

Hole where longer handle is missing??

Pete

I failed to give addition info. I had previously stated an old home site. The owner of the property bought the 160 acres in 1957 and the house was gone then, nothing remains but the foundation. The property is @ 30 miles south of Kansas city on the state line. There were major skirmishes between Missouri and Kansas during the civil war. I do not know if the house was there during that period of time. The above item was found about 100 foot from the foundation under a rather large cedar tree. Thanks for the responses for I am truly baffled, I was wondering if the " handle" could be a belt loop?

Maybe a cap & handle that was used at the end of a spade or shovel or similar tool . This could have been many things . There might have been two with a post in between to carry buckets of water or there may have been three more that made the handles to carry a cot for transporting the injured . The hole was to place a fastener/pin of some sort , maybe made from wood or even iron that has disappeared with the passage of time . I don't believe it's a belt loop because of the shape . Maybe it was the end of a flag post that fit into another piece that went around the waste and the whole was for a pin to keep it in place . How long is it ? What is the diameter of this piece ? All I can say is that I'm almost sure it's a cap to keep a wooden post from splintering . IMHO .. HH , Woodstock

I'm thinking maybe a whiffle tree tip. Here is a similar one on ebay. http://www.ebay.com/itm/horse-buggy-chain-end-Whiffle-tree-ends-/290371581930

Is the size the same after goggling it I think a whiffletree tip is much larger inside diameter is only 7/8inch those look to be double that. You had me excited for a little while most like able answer so far. Keep up the good work I am sure it will be solved soon.

Take a look at this. Just a long shot

Good try and a fair guess but to me again I feel is one of those Whiffletree thig-a-ma-gigs . Maybe small ones where for small donkey carts ... LoL ! But seriously I must be a end cap and the handle isn't for your hands but for a chain or rope . The hole is from a missing the fastener that held it in place . If anyone else can weigh in on this speak up cause till we know I'm stickin' to those Whiffletrees .... Happy Trails , Woodstock

woodstock, I think you might be right but not the way you think you are... LOL
Earlier you mentioned a flag pole, I think it might be a tip or topper to one. Still just guessing though, once someone figures it out it will be obvious.

If the "belt loop" were straightened and a belt sliped through with the open end up...
Could it be for holding the base of a flag on parade??

Just a thought.
I really don't have any idea...

cool find.
HH

I think I said this before cause that was my first guess due to it's size and shape . But if the "belt loop" was to be straightened it would also bend the body of the object and I think the bend was there from day one, HH , Woodstock

Hummmmm... maybe . maybe not . But with that again part of the subject I feel it the base end that fits into a waste belt kind of socket and then a strap or belt goes threw the belt loop . There might have been a security pin to keep the pole in place that would explain the hole . Remember the picture you found shows it being made of brass and a more ordinate design . The one in question appears to be made of iron and a basic working design . HH , Woodstock
