Any one used the Coiltek 6" digger coil in high mineralized soil?

Digger 45

Active member
The specs say the the digger runs quietly in low mineralized soil, i have high mineralized soil and can not use anything but a DD coil. I 'm using the 10x4 DD with good results, it runs quiet and performs very well. I'm hoping that with the Coiltek being a DD coil it will work well in my soil. So what have some of you experianced by using it in different types of soil?

I am running the CoilTek Digger right now on my 705 and my soil would be considered highly mineralized. I am ground balancing at 22 and yesterday at 18. I can only get the sensitivity to 24 and she starts to chatter. Great coil, it can really find the goodies, however in my highly mineralized soil it is far from quiet.

Don't be afraid to lower the Sens even more to stabilize the machine. It need not be chatty to bring home the goods.
It's a hot little coil, and it's easy to do two bad things; 1) swing too fast 2) overdrive it for conditions
Slow down before turning the Sensitivity down. Often high tone falsing is just the machine reminding you that you're going too fast.
If that doesn't do it, turn the Sens down one step at a time until it's operating smoothly. As long as your Sens doesn't require being turned down below about 17 to be stable it should perform well.

Great tips OLH. I could be swinging too fast as my last machine was a Fisher F-75. I even find I swing the eTrac too fast and have to remind myself to slow down.

My ground balance with the 705/Digger combo is typically in the low 20s, dipping sometimes into the single digits. I can often manage to run the Digger at 24-26 sensitivity under those conditions if I take it slow, otherwise I'll bump it down a few clicks. The Digger is such a hot coil that I may turn it down to 18-22 anyway, once I start running across targets, to reduce false readings from metal-trash.* Also be sure that you aren't lifting up the coil at the ends of your swing -- keep it parallel to the ground -- as that is where I tend to get the most chatter and false signals.

*In general, the digger makes it very easy to tell coin (round, solid) targets from other targets -- and definitely iron! -- but obviously not everything we dig are coins. Oddly shaped bits of tin, foil, etc, may hit at just about any number/tone, especially if the sensitivity is set high, but are typically not repeatable OR the number/tone will change as you wiggle the coil away from the target. Coins tend to be a solid single number or pair of numbers (e.g., 40, or 40/42) that stay pretty steady until you've moved the coil completely away. On the other hand, I dug an 1888 Indian Head penny in good condtion the other day that was a horrible, jumpy, trashy signal. It was on edge about 4 inches down, sure, but what an oddball.

Thanks for your help, i usually run sens from 18 to 22 to run quiet with the 10x5 DD and going slow is the key. I believe its worth a try, i have some areas that are real trashy and i know they have been passed over because of the trash making it impossible to hunt.

It happens a lot. I pulled 7 quarters from around a park bench in a local park that gets pounded because there is so much trash around that bench. That's why the digger was my first coil purchase. I like going into the areas that everyone else gives up on! :detecting:
