Anyone here played with the all metal mode on the GT?

New member
I was just going over some old notes from when I had the Original Sovereign back in the 90's and it seems that in the all metal fixed mode the signal is supposed to act similar to VCO but it does it according conductance of the target. If the target is a coin the threshold will increase/rise as you near the the coin and decrease/lower as you pass the coin much like VCO but on lower conductive targets like iron and foil the threshold will decrease/lower as you near the iron or foil and increase as you pass the target. I don't remember actually trying it in the field and these notes either came from the manual or when I talked to someone at Minelab. I was just wondering if anyone had tried it? The tides aren't right this week for me to test this.

I believe JBow (?) has pointed this out, or at least something similar. If I remember right he said All Metal has a kind of cut off or mock discrimination function right around the nickle range in conductivity. Targets higher than that will raise and lower as you pass the target, while targets lower than that will do the reverse...Or something like that, maybe vise versa in terms of response. JBow, you around to clue us in?

I would like to apologize if I seemed a bit abrupt in some of my responses in debating iron mask and or discrimination earlier. It's just my personality. I'm an old salty Sea Captain and it comes out sometimes . My wife used to say to me.. you leave that boat talk on the boat when you come home.

Not needed. It is I who should apologize. My last responses on that in the GT video thread were a little too pointed in my opinion. That's why I haven't even read that thread anymore. I was afraid to see what you might have to say to me to push back. So if you did say anything in there then no matter, since I'm not going to read it.

I'm also trying to make a real effort to shorten down my responses and not be so repetitive as well. That's why I'm working on all the links digging through the old threads in here from various sources. Once I get enough links into a thread on various topics (not just from me, ain't that way in terms of always believing I'm right), I'm going to see if the moderator will throw them up as stickies. I've got a few ideas. First links should be a run down of the various Sovereign models, meter, coils, etc. Second links page would be of how to set the various functions on the machine, pros and cons of differing opinions on that that are hotly debated, etc. Probably the first links before anything will be comparisons of the Sovereign to various other machines, as people first looking into it will of course want to investigate that. Further links will be mods, and so on. I'm going to try to organize it in progression of initial interest in the Sovereign, to which models there are to think about buying, to set up and use, to coil options, to mods, and so on. That's probably the best order to place it in.

Either way, to each his own. Truth is anyway I'm getting tired of constantly repeating my position or views on various things and settings. That's what the links to every body's views/opinions will be useful for. The only thing I plan to expound on in terms of longer messages will be my field reports of the GT in general as well as the 12x10 in comparison to others in that thread. Trying to stream line my life a little here. Spending too much time on the web.

Critterhunter;
That is a good idea,

"Probably the first links before anything will be comparisons of the Sovereign to various other machines, as people first looking into it will of course want to investigate that."

"First links should be a run down of the various Sovereign models, meter, coils, etc."

I have to say I agree, some times it seems like you spend hours trying to find one item. If they were posted some what in the order you are suggesting would be great.

I for one appreciate folks who challenge what they see and hear , and not just take what's said for gospel .... We are all in this together , and if someone has a point to prove , I will be all ears .....I will try ANYTHING and give it complete objectivity ..... I have learned SO MUCH from folks on this forum that just don't take yes or no for an answer ......This is how we learn ..... We all know what they say about opinions ....If I try something that works for me , I will pass it on ....This is not to say that it will work for everyone .... If you think you have a better way, or you found something that you didn't think that someone else knew , send it out there !!..... I can debate an issue to the enth degree with someone , and end up disagreeing with them ......This does not mean I don't respect that person for what they believe , it simply means that I don't agree with them .... That's healthy, and I'm thankful that we challenge each other , and strive for better detecting ..... I guess what I'm saying is that I don't think that ANYONE here has to appologize for stating their opinions and by stating facts as they see it ..... I'd like to see MORE people involved in discussions ..... Thanks to ALL you guys who belive in something and have the will to put it out there ..... If you think it needs ot be said, SAY IT !!........Jim

Critter ,
If you don't like your style , change it .......Don't change it for anyone elses account ......I for one totally enjoy reading what you have to say, and I don't care how many times you say it .....

Crazyman,
You have your own style too !!.... DON' T change it !!..... We're all big boys and girls here .......

As for me ......as Popeye would say ...." I am's who I am's " .......Jim

In an air test ( yes folks I did air test something in a moment of weakness) it responded to the targets as described in my notes but on targets in the ground it did just the opposite. Every target that went from a high threshold tone to a low threshold tone was a nail or piece of foil so I switched gears and only started digging the signals that went from low to high and those ended up being a few zincs and one clad dime. That's odd but I need to try it on the beach to see if I get any depth with these signals and if they even stay the same at depth. When you go over a target you have to go extremely slow to get the two separate tones. I don't see any use for this on land but it might be useful on the beach for small gold if it has depth. The two tone response is similar to the Garrett Infinum P.I. with it's two tone ID.

My wife made me. I wish she wouldn't sneak up behind me like that when I'm typing. She's not here now so screw everybody that disagrees with me!

I also prefer that people write their comments even if it is to disagree, or have a different opinion rather than just read and say nothing, sometimes one can't see the wood for the trees and a comment can help, lately it seems that only 4 or 5 of us are debating the things out here but the topics have hundreds of visits.

Hey crazyman, welcome aboard the retirement ship, more than 35 years on the briney for me, last 17 as Skipper, Mostly Deep sea Fishing, Oil rig tender/supply and the likes

Very interesting. You have to take into consideration the type of soil or the moisture in the sand or ground.
You can get a good signal on somethings and a poor signal on somethings just because of the soil mineralization or moisture. jmho

I'm semi retired after 32 years in the Maritime Industry. I still do some short trips and dock a ship here and there. I ran tugs for years in Alaska and worked as Chief Mate and Master on Military Sea lift Command vessels, mostly tankers. My last full time job was in the Gulf Of Mexico as Captain on a 350 ft. SAT dive vessel repairing and/or capping under water pipelines off of Louisiana. I'm just 56 so can't retire full time yet.

Different points of view are great. If everyone hunted the same nothing would be left. Hunt like I do and there is always something left. HH :minelab:

Crazyman ,
You came off the open sea's after 32 yrs , and came home , and now your wife looks over your shoullder ? ......... I'm not gonna say a word !!......SHHHHHHHHHHHH !!....Mum's the word !!...............:cry::rofl::cry::rofl:

For all you guys that would like to participate , but have a lot of questions , ASK !!!......The only stupid question is the one you didn't ask ....... Sometimes things that you might notice , might just ge a tremendous help to someone else .....Remember, W'e're all in this together ....Jim

So far the places I hunt , except for the beach , are too squirely for me to hunt in All Metal .....I'm spoiled and like to double check my targets with the meter .....I can't do that in All Metal .....Sooner or later I"ll get good enough to take the meter off of the Sovereign .......Jim

HA! That's too good. So if that's the case then I'll say this...I was only apologizing because it's the right thing to do when somebody says that to you. You can also go to straight to h*ll.

Not really, I did get a little too intense with my response. I'm trying to avoid that sort of stuff where I can. Most of it's already been said a hundred times on any topic on here, and not just from me.

Jim, I just got a PM today along the lines of what you touched on from somebody else (not in this thread). He ended up just PMing me so he could make a smart little remark. I replied in a civil manner and in return he came back with more smack talk. Something about me "passing on bad information I'm getting from elsewhere" without even being specific about what he was refering to. Let's see...if anything I can at least chalk up to my credit disproving a lot of myths about batteries, and more specifically the constant myth in detector land that better batteries (or more cells) give a machine better performance.

Then there is the statistical graphing I did on a huge random test sample of rings, disproving the notion that dectorists always say that most gold rings read in the nickle range, or that most of them read in the pulltab range. Not true in either respect. They are spread pretty evenly acrossed the entire spectrum of conductivity. The only place they are less scare is about zinc penny or higher, but they still exist in that range too (also a common myth that they don't exist that high).

Now the rest of the "bad information" I'm "passing along" (whatever that was in reference to), you can keep your own score card on and decide who you want to believe. What I told him was along the lines of what you just said. That we are all adults here who can make up our own minds. Just because I believe something to be true in my experience doesn't make it true for you, but I'll be darned if I'm going to let somebody tell me so absolutely that what he believes is right and I don't know what I'm talking about. At least be specific so we can debate.

I also don't plan on accepting any more PMs from this person. Life's too short. He initialy contacted me out of the blue via a PM and wasn't exactly civil. I replied with a response containing no personal attack in kind. His response to that was to come back with another snyde comment. I expect more of the same if he responds again, so any future PMs get filed in the round filing cabinet (trash). I'm not going to name names, and there will be no further issues here, because I don't have time to fight somebody's war that I could care less about in the first place. Life is way too short and getting shorter is the way I look at it. Peace out. :smoke:

PS- My problem is that when I discover something I want to share it with people. I enjoy that. That's half the fun of investigating new things for me. Even had a respected member of the Sovereign world who sells a quality product (again, no names) PM me and tell me he agreed with the way I thought about certain things (no idea what he was refering to, though) and that he's surprised I'm not selling some of the stuff I've put up on here. I appreciated this remark, though his product is more deserving of praise in terms of what it's about. The point being that I give more weight to the praise of this person because of their character, than I do the critisism from the other person for the same reason. Since neither one was specific I have no idea what concept, theory, or wild goose chase they were both referring to.

Crazyman, you must have missed it. The above was in no way referring to our little turf war on Iron Mask. I said I was talking about somebody else. I know of this person but never have talked to him before, that's why I was taken back with his rude remark in a PM out of the blue. Nothing like a stranger sending you a private message just to bust your chops.

Again, nothing to do with you, but a related topic that I figured I'd bring up in response to Jim's message. I used almost the exact same kind of thought process he did when I replied to this person's cold remarks. That's what I was saying. Nothing more, and not about you or Iron Mask. Totally unrelated. Wish I could be more specific than that, but I have no idea what this person's beef was in the first place.

The debate was about your pull tab and dime air test. I wasn't trying to prove I was right I was relating what Minelab themselves wrote about how iron mask works. Minelab states that the iron mask feature is in no way related to the discrimination mode on the detector and that one has no effect on the other and that the iron mask feature is a desperate function related to masking between ferrous and non ferrous only. hence the debate about your statement that the iron mask feature being the reason for some improved ID on a dime under or near a pull tab in a air test. If you would have said that iron mask gave you a better signal or ID on a dime under or near a piece of iron in the ground there would never have been a debate.
