Anyone hip mount a Sovereign?

TJPHILLY2

New member
Hello all...i am plannng to hip mount...and/or possibly shoulder
bag mount the control box on a Minelab Sovereign XS 2A Pro.

I have been told that doing so makes the machine false..I suppose
from the coil detecting its own cable.

Have you found this? What steps did you take to minimize
or correct it?

Any help apprrciated.

HH all...

TJ

TJ i been hip mounting my GT for a few years or chest mount i have no problem with the machine falsing because of the cable i have about 30 inches of cable from center shaft to the hip bag plenty to swing with i extend my shaft full that way the coil is plenty far enough away from the hanging wire . Hope this helps HH Jim

I tried the hip mount but, it kept wanting to pull my pants down!!! I finally settled on a chest mount using a Bob Allen fly fishing chest pack and good ole work suspenders from Lowe's.

Mine is waterproofed...in backpack. If it was not waterproofed, it would be belt mounted somehow...maybe chest mounted.

Thanks all.

I have ordered a Plugger straight shaft that is made for hip mounting. Anyone use
a setup like that?

One thing I wonder about is...how can a straight shaft have balance if the coil
is at one end and only the arm cuff at the other?

Any input appreciated...TJ

Balance may be off, but all you will have is weight of the coil. You will be able to swing it as long as you want to.

Come straight up the shaft with the coil wire. About 3/4 of the way. Make sure you leave just enough slack for the coil to bend backwards in case a wave gets it or you stumble with it. I secure the cable to the shaft with silicone tape. It is waterproof. It pops right off with a slice. It holds the cable secure. And it leaves no sticky residue at all.

I chest mount the Sovereign to keep it higher out of the water. I use a sovereign bag with two straps. One around my neck and one around my back to keep it from swinging out when I bend over.

It is also a good idea to wrap the cable around something before you plug it into the bottom of the Sovereign. Again if a wave takes your shaft and coil or you fall some where the cable will not pull on the connection at the box.

If you salt water hunt get a can of silicone spray and spray the cable and wipe it down once in a while. The salt water can be hard on the rubber. Also take your shaft apart and rinse it with fresh water. Or after a while the upper and lower will sieze together.

Hello Goodmore - thanks for all the information.

I have also ordered a Sovereign bag - the one featured on Kellyco's website.

It fits the GT just right - not sure how well it will fit the XS-2A PRO - it looks like the GT control head is a little bigger. I guess I can rig up something to take up extra space in the bag if it turns out to be problematic.

I was not aware that the Sovereign bag has two straps. I will check it all out when it gets here.

I am not really planning on going in the water much more than up to my calves- not many Jersey Shore beach hunters do to be honest because our surf is so rough...even waist deep it is hard to control your coil and scoop in the surf on most NJ beaches,

Thanks for the input...HH all,

TJ

I've hip mounted mine for over 10 years and never had a Problem, at the pin connection to the box ,just wrap a few times with Duct Tape, to keep from pulling the rubber boot from the connector..Goldnugget
