Anyway to clean these types of finds?

I went hunting in an old part of town. I actually didn't find anything but nails and such. However, I did find what appears to be an old safe deposit box key. I wish I found the box it went to!
Anyway. As you can see its quite corroded from being in the ground.

Is there anything I can do to clean it up? Anyone know about how old it is? It says American Savings Bank on it. But couldn't find much info online.

I use a brass wire brush on finds like that. Small ones are often found at the dollar stores in a three pack.

What is it made of? I soak things like that in white vinegar and use a sonic brush on them.
