Are the upper rods interchangeable on the XS...EX II and the SE

I was thinking about getting a Sunray probe for an XS, but the upper rods are no longer available. It seems like I read somewhere that the upper rods are shaped a little different on the newer models, any info will be of great help, thanks.

I think it depends if your XS has been modified or not Dan. If it has been back to the service center for the mod, it should have the newer EX2 housing. I have an un-modified XS, but I am using the EX2 upper with the X-1 pinpointer attached. It wiggles and will come out of the housing if I let it. I think the only difference is a TAB on the lower side of the XS upper which is missing on the EX2 upper. I am going to try to drill a hole on the upper part and hammer a TAB into the lower part through the hole to match the XS upper arm. That should make the EX2 arm lock into place better on the XS. The other alternative is you can send your XS upper to SunRay and he will mount the X-1 on it for you.

The original XS upper rod had a blunt end (square cut) and I guess they also had a small bump on somewhere (I never noticed the bump). The II and SE have a diagonal cut end. You can fit the newer one into the old XS housing but it will be somewhat loose. A single layer of clear 3" packing tape carefully wrapped around the end and trimmed off should make it stick in better.

If you have an old upper shaft it will not fit into the new machines unless you cut it off at a diagonal. When I had my XS repaired the last time before I sold it, they put the newer control housing on there. Unfortunately none of my upper shafts would fit on the unit. Pretty poor public relations to get your machine repaired but be unable to put it back together. I ended up cutting off the upper shaft (with probe) at an angle with a hack saw. Worked good.

ML did send me a new one that fit, after I called. The dang lower shafts were too tight for the new one though - spent hours sanding to get it right. I think there is a lower shaft opening difference between the first EII and the later EII shafts. It is tighter on the later ones.

Hope this helps and Happy New Year!
