Asking Permission from Corporate Owners

I detect on a lot of tracts of land that are owned by corporations in California. I'm pretty sure they've never set foot on the land, just waiting to sell it to a developer. I won't go on private property but I will detect these types of properties. If I don't do it now it will be a mall or housing development in a few years. Of course my opinion is self serving, but it's what I do.
 
Hmm, you seem to make a distinction between "types" of private property, eh? Even though a nameless faceless mega-corporations land is still "private property", you I believe we can *all* instinctivelly know the difference between THAT type of "private" land, versus someone's front yard of their house. I'm not saying that "makes it right", but ........ just saying, that we all, if we admit it, do see and know a difference between such types of private land. I too would feel bad sneaking around on some little old ladies front lawn. But to hop a fence into a pasture that's slated to be turned into a wall-mart? No, I see that as different. Is it *technically* different? No. But is it *realistically* different? Yes.
 
It's interesting how, as kids, signs didn't mean a thing to us. Our parents had a very long leash and didn't see or know where we were, starting from the age of 5 or 6. We went and explored wherever our feet would take us.....no boundaries. If there was a fence, we climbed it. If there were woods, we're going in. If rumor had it that the land owner shot rock salt, we tested her. Apple orchards, forget it, we're getting apples. Veggie gardens, we're getting tomatoes to eat before we sneak into the drive in.

We also believed that there were trolls in certain areas. We were convinced that a stone with a white stripe in it would scare off a troll, so we carried one around or looked for one before entering the area.

Adventure was what we left so early in the morning for, paying little attention to the rules around us. We got away with it as kids, most of the time. Sometimes now, that 'kid' in me tries to do the thinking, so I really have to watch he doesn't take over....much. My guess is many of you guys grew up the same way, and when you look at the kids today, ya can't help felling sorry for them. Being a kid is a lost art these days.

Ain't it the truth Mud.
I saw some kids building a fort last year in the woods. I couldn't believe how it upped my spirits. I came this close to go out and pitch in. But then I thought, nah, they don't need some old adult hanging around. Better they work on their imagination, themselves. And, I could picture the kids at dinner saying "guess what ma? some old guy was in the woods today helping us build our fort". "WHAAAT!!".
 
Steve-0, you made me think about when I was a kid too. Good post. We used to make hay-bail forts in the hay-fields near our house. And come to think of it, no one ever said we couldn't. In fact, it would never have occured to us that we COULDN'T. Or for that matter, couldn't walk there (d/t it was private property). I mean, heck, short-cut paths across the field were what we took to grade school each day. Oh my oh my what criminals we were. Tsk Tsk. Say it isn't so.

So here we all are, as adults, 30+ yrs. later, debating on whether or not we can essentially take short-cut paths now! I know I know "metal detecting is different" the argument would go. Yeah sure. Ok, if you're that hot & bothered that detecting is somehow inherently that evil, FINE THEN. Stay at home and don't move or go anywhere.
 
We used to go play all day and our parents never really worried about us. We would come home to eat then go out and play till almost dark. I grew up in the 50's and 60's, those were the days. These days it is just plain dangerous out there, that is really sad.....
 
Kicked up some good memories, huh guys?. I also grew up in the 50's and 60's John. Looking back...I had a blast.
 
Hey kids!
I thought you'd like to know that out of 5 requests I mailed to out-of-town property owners I've received permission to metal detect on one property. Yahoo! That, my friends, is encouraging and I'm no longer mad at the state of the world today. There are still some good people out there who will say "Yes". God Bless'em.
