At the park with the Gamma 6000

New member
I finally got to go to a local park with my new Gamma 6000 and I am very happy with how this detector responds in trashy areas with its target separation abilities. The first picture, the one with the watch, was taken on the 28th and the other was taken on the 29th. The Gamma has a quick recovery rate and was a joy to hunt with. Deepest coin was 4 to 5 inches. Sens @ 60, disc @ 20, GB 68-72. I ordered an 11 inch DD coil to try in an area that is no longer used, but was once several ball fields. Maybe some deeper silver coins?

In my front yard, which I thought was hunted out by my Pioneer 505, I managed to pull 3 pennies out of an area with a high amount of iron trash. I was very surprised by this as I am quite proficient with the 505. Looking forward to future hunts with the Gamma, I can definitely get used to this machine. I will probably get the smaller 5 inch DD coil next week. If it does for the Gamma what the 4 inch coil did for the 505, I will be a very happy camper! Take care everyone, and Happy Hunting!

Congrats Capt. Seems like you had a really fun hunt. I bet you will get 3" of depth if need be as well.
Amazing what technology is getting to with metal detectors. For the money, just really good deals.

I am sure you'll find it to be a nice compliment to the stock 8". I've always been partial to smaller-than-stock coils, and while the 8" is a good general-purpose coil, the round 5" DD is just impressive!

All of the Teknetics models feature a quick-response and fast-recovery which makes them a joy to use in trashy and/or brushy environments. A good friend of mine is watching his detector buying budget. While he likes what my Omega does, especially compared with the competition for the difference in the $$$ cost, he was more impressed with the Gamma. He likes the buttons, doesn't care for knobs, and for $100 less it provides almost everything the Omega does. That's what he's going to buy, and I'm sure he'll like the performance just as you are.

I usually hunt with the Sensitivity as high as possible w/o chatter (falsing), but even at a Sensitivity setting of '60' those 4"-5" coins are still easily found.

The 11" DD will give more coverage and, in some cases, you might get an additional inch or two. in older and unused areas, such as you mentioned, the 11" DD might be good if there aren't a lot of modern trash targets about. Good luck on finding silver, but I wouldn't necessarily expect it to be 'deep'. Most of my older, unused sites still have kicked out silver coins in the upper 4" most of the time.

I hate to break this news to you, but I have used the 4" BH coil in many places and they worked OK. But if you invest in the 5" DD to use on your Gamma, you won't be a "happy camper." Nope, instead you'll be a bit more :hot: because performance on my Omega or Gamma is quite impressive. Just remember not to over-sweep the smaller coils as you can go too fast.

Remember to report in on how you do with any coil at any site, and keep on listing your coil used and the settings you picked.

Best of success! The Gamma is a top-end performance unit, to be sure.

Thank you earthmansurfer and Monte for your replies. Hey Monte, the reason for the sens @ 60 is that in the particular area where I was there are many underground electric wires running to various lights and even a stage. Lots of EMI, even at 60.

I am also very partial to the smaller coil. I love what it did for my 505, and will definitely purchase it very soon for my Gamma, but to be honest with myself, having never had a big DD coil, I wanted to have one to conduct my own tests to see how it performs in my area. Your comment is respected and appreciated.

Way too many places during the last decade seem to be plagued with too much EMI. I understand the reduced setting as I, too, have to do the same when called for. Wise decision #1.

Wise decision #2, in my opinion, is your decision to want to try the 11" DD coil for yourself. It is a good coil and it certainly has its place, but too often people, acquire a coil, for example, simply because someone makes great claims about it. We all need to evaluate these things for ourselves because a lot depends upon what out patience level is, what the site challenges are, and how it all comes together for us, personally.

I look forward to reading your reports on using the Gamma with all coils.
