Audio/visual ID question

Mick in Dubbo

New member
Is it normal for the Explorer to give a high fluty tone while giving a reading of ten on the metre? The detector is an XS, and it is set up on standard factory presets.
This was only one reading of quite a few mismatched visual/audio readings that I've been getting and this is after numerous sweeps past the target, even after resting the detector to the side of the target to allow it time to reset itself and then going back over the target again.
I've also found that both the digital and smart screen can remain blank for 15 to 20 seconds after I have switched screens. It doesn't do it all the time, but often enough to be of concern.
Mick Evans.

Normal for this to happen. When I switch over on my XS to Smartfind (I hunt with the Digital Screen myself) Screen to see where the Target is located, I sometimes have to swing over a Different Target to get the Cursor to display on the screen and then I can go over the Target in Question. The key is just to get a different Tone and then the Display will update itself when switching to different Screens. As for a High Tone on a reading of 10 on Digital? Are you using All Metal -16 Iron Mask with Ferrous Tones??? The only ways this could happen is using these settings or if in Conduct, you may be swinging over a Target that has a Conduct Tone (Coin) and when you stop with the swing you may be catching a Low Tone (Pull Tab) that makes the detector display a 10 Numerical Reading. What is your Recovery Set on? Using Fast On Only will help with this Problem. Deep should only be used when in a Fairly Clean Area. I hope this helps you out a bit and if anything else comes to mind that you need help with or just a little info about, either PM me or just post here again and I am sure one of us can help you out. Good Luck and HH!

James give some good advice and This is one of the advantages of the SE as it will update the screen faster when changing from smart find to digital, but it too sometimes takes a couple of sweeps to get it visual.
Now on the reading of 10 and the high tone of a coin is all possible if you are looking at the numbers while getting the audio of a good high tone. The display will show the last target it seen even if you didn't hear it. What happens is you could hear the good target, but there maybe a trash target beside it and the coil will go over it so the display show the trash target even though you heard the good one. The display will show the last target it sees after the threshold returns is why the audio is more important than the display on IDing with the Explorers. When this happens to me I will try to go over just the small area of the target and lift the coil before it can see anything more, but sometimes it is hard to do and I just dig the target. One more thing is try using the pinpoint and pinpoint it and see if it stays in the same place then go back to your disc pattern being you know exactly where the target is and see if it give the same tones and readings on the screen as it did before.

Thanks James and Rick. That clears things up for me. I'll turn on the fast response to see if that helps as well. The Deep mode is off.
I think that I must have been spoilt with the recovery speed of my X-Terra and Ace. I guess that this is the learning curve that everybody must be talking about.
Cheers.
