Autotrac or not??

Still getting use to my XL Pro and was wondering what criteria people here uses whether to use autotrac or to lock it, after Ground Balancing. Any help would be greatly appreciated!! Thanks!

HH,

Frank

Hi Frank,

I lock it after ground balance. Doesn't mean it's right, it's just what I do. I've read that small targets could be tracked out. I believe I also read where it can affect the target signal with multiple sweeps over the target. Again, it's a habit I use that may, or may not, be the correct choice. I, too, would like to hear other thoughts on the subject. Thanks for asking it.

When hunting my wooded iron infested sites locking it gives better performance and it runs much smoother. For open park type hunting I'm not sure. In my heavy mineralized ground old coins especially silver dimes at depth just beyond the fringe of good audio and meter ID can be missed if the GB is off to much but at the same time I've heard that these same small targets can also be tracked out. I haven't been able to prove the tracking out theory though at least in my test plot. I usually lock mine and check the GB often. It just takes a minute to check the GB and reset it if needed.

with lots of iron trash which can affect the ground balance. If there is an over abundance of iron trash items, it will have a tendency of "fooling" the AutoTrac into thinking that the ground mineralization content is changing. In South Texas, the ground is fairly stable and I hunt in the lock position. Kelley (Texas ) :)
