Awful Police Encounter (Resolved)

First and foremost, thanks to everybody on this forum for your support. I had a bit of a bad time after my ordeal and as I wrote many times last week, all of your support meant a lot to me. This is an email I sent to a buddy regarding the incident a few minutes ago. After I reread it I think it is fine as a followup for you folks. Sometimes everything happens as it should. I am NOT going to file the complaint only because a couple of folks told me this is not going to happen again and I believe these two guys.

I had myself pretty much worked up over the incident I described to you last weekend. I made some follow up phone calls on Tuesday and nobody seemed to be returning my calls. I figured it was the "good old boy" network kicking in. I had written my complaint which was in my opinion very damaging to the deputy. I was going to file it this morning but decided to wait until Monday. I'm glad I waited. I just got a phone call from the Chief of the Town Police where the incident took place. We talked for around 1/2 hour. In the middle of our conversation he said "I'd like to personally invite you back to the park to metal detect any time you want." He told me that there had been a lot of discussion in Town government about the incident and that the opinion was overwhelmingly on my side. He was very frank with me and said if one of his officers behaved like the deputy did to me that he would be reprimanded at a minimum. The young deputy who was present for part of the ordeal corroborated my story which restores my faith in the system. He also corroborated that the deputy was "out of control" at times. I also found out the Town Supervisor was a retired deputy and was also firmly on my side. I am elated and a great weight was lifted from my shoulders. This Chief is the kind of officer I admire and I told him I was looking forward to meeting him and shaking his hand. I had some help from my pal in the Sheriff's Department in my county. He is the Under Under Sheriff and is a close friend. He came to the bar last night and told me he had just met with the deputy involved and told him he wasn't much of a cop because of the way he handled a complete non event. My pal said the guy didn't have much to say. The two counties have a joint drug task force and my pal said he pretty much dressed him down as much as he could not being formally in his chain of command.

My faith in the system remains. Sometimes the little guy (and right guy) does come out on top. This is exactly how I wanted it to end. I still wish it never happened.

Yes I did go out today and found 79 clad coins for $8.01, a Namco token, a button, a tiny lock, and about 200 pop tops. Sorry, no pic.

way to go. I am glad that it all worked out in the end. It's a shame that some people are just plain power hunger and feel that their position allows them to throw their weight around.

I am glad that you waited. I have learned it is best to write things when we are angry to get them out but not send them for 2 or three days. That gives you a chance to cool off and in your case, a response from someone above that deputy!!

Way to go and congrats on your finds too!!!

Sad to say that you had to suffer all of that for 8 dollars!!!

That 8 bucks was today. I tried two new spots which were bad and one old standby that was midway between them. Today's hunt had nothing to do with my ordeal up north of here. In fact, I went most of the day without thinking about it at all for the first time since it happened. Then I got that call around 4ish and my day was made.

I wasn't angry when I wrote the complaint but I was determined. I spent a lot of time on it but I'm still glad I don't have to use it. I wrote a real nice letter to the Town Supervisor praising his Police Chief. I just posted it too!

Chris

I'm glad it got resolved, and from some people in higher authority. Now you can just forget about it and continues what you like to do in your spare time.

Glad it all worked out for you bud and you get to detect where you weren't supposed to according to Godzilla.. That ought to be worth something. :)

Bill

Good for you Chris!! As long as you're happy and back on the horse that is all it matters. :thumbup:Happy Metal detecting!!!:detecting:

That's great news Chris. it would be unpleasant to continue going out perusing your hobby, knowing that such an individual can come along like that and cause that much grief. Now you can enjoy the hobby again.
well done.
Mick Evans.

I would have enjoyed the hobby regardless. It is nice to see that this officer's peers and supervisors acted objectively. I can't wait to go back to the park. Maybe next Thursday.

Chris

I am completely satisfied. The only thing I really lost was the two hours of additional detecting I would have gotten in if I hadn't been wrongly asked to leave.

Chris

Thabnks John. Luckily I have plenty of spare time to er.... um...... spare.
