Guys, had a great stay in Mexico, THANK YOU ALL FOR ANSWERING MY QUESTIONS AND THE HELPFUL VIDEOS> I found 12 rings, 5 gold, 7 silver and numerous pieces of necklaces and bracelets. Every now and again I would use a technique I had watched on the video or read about(listen for the faint tones, swing slooooow), I hunted in all metal which I watched from a video. Kept a log and hunted 50 hrs. and learned so much, am returning in Jan. for 2 months and plan on hunting till I drop, oh by the way Clive's books were great
The silver rings are almost black and hard to clean, Tarnx doesn't seem to help much, once i get the silver cleaned will send a picture. Any suggestions on a simple solution.

Hears how i clean silver rings thats fast and works
1. get a dremel tool with small stainless wire wheel attachment
2.wire wheel the black junk off using light pressure on the wheel
3.after you get the black junk off put on a small buffing wheel on the dremel add some
buffing rouge on the buffing wheel(it only takes a little) and buff the ring out(if you have a ring mandral it makes it easyer to buff the ring as it will get hot if you press too hard while buffing
total time per ring is about 3 to 4 min. for me and the ring will look brand new

Hi Gerry,

I have found many silver rings in my years of hunting that would mostly disappear when I started removing the encrustation.

Salt water can so badly oxidize the silver as to destroy the ring band and greatly reduce the volume of what-ever is left!

I have silver coins so thin that they are almost razor sharp on the edge from oxidation.

Newly dropped rings are another matter, but old ones lost in salt water are often only useful as object lessons about corrosion and to add to the scrap pile.
