Beach and Tide Question ??

ferdware

New member
Hello all,
Just want to make sure Im figuring this right. Can items lost in the water at the beach later be washed up further down the beach? Say a few hundred yards.

thank you
Ferd

Yes. A couple years ago I was snorkeling in Hawai'i at Makaha and was amazed at the speed of a North to South longshore current just about 10' into the water. It took sand and everything else, including me, for a ride South. To get off, I just had to swim out to slight deeper water and then make my way back to my family sitting on the beach. I made the ride a couple times and noticed while doing so that the 'current' had scoured the sand away to the volcanic bottom.

The current was certainly strong enough to move sand and everything else down the shore where it would be washed up on the beach at a later time.

you have high tides, low tides and storms to carry items around. You also have currents that can take a said item up or down the beach too. All beaches are not the same, so the tides and the currents will make a difference from one location to another.

Yes, we have some furious rip currents here on Lake Mich that run parallel to the shore, as well as big ice that scour and scrape, I've found some nice stuff "downstream" from the main swimming areas, and not much old stuff upstream from them, so If I hit a beach and can only hunt one part, it would be the downstream side.
