Beach hunting

New member
New to the forum and never been exposed to much beach hunting. Mostly a relic hunter but tried the beach in september in Wildwood N.J. Had alot of fun for a few days and found a few silver rings and earings along with clad. I have a whites DFX And it works great in the woods but I was paranoid to drop it in the water so I didn't go far past my ankles. My question is if I decide to get a water detector what are my best options. I have never had anything but whites.

It depends where you are... we each have our favorite detector types... example if you were in the Jersey area I would say to go with a VLF machine because of the high iron content there... the DFX is ok in the wet sand, I used to use mine there until I got the Sovereign GT which is deeper than the DFX... but the DFX is a fine machine and very stable in the wet sand... you want to hunt in the water? How much do you want to spend?

Personally I prefer a PI for the water and a VLF for the wet sand that has a lot of iron in it...

Look into a Minelab Excalibur or a Fisher CZ21 both high end machines... or a detector like the Whites Beachhunter... I'm, sure others will chime in ;)

I hunt with a Whites Dual Field and a Minelab Sovereign GT...

I have 2 water hunting detectors,a Excalibur 2 and a Tesoro Sand Shark.I prefer to use the Excalibur 2,because it has discrimination and tone identification.I have not really learned the tones in the 2 years since,so I just dig anything that doesn't null out,as iron usually does. What ever you decide to buy, there are some times good used detectors for sale on some of the metal detecting forums. The Sand Shark is cheaper, but has no discrimination. The Fisher CZ21 is also a really great detector.Best of luck and welcome to beach hunting.

There are many choices and many opinions, but any of the High end machines will suit you well for the beach. The main thing is choose a machine specifically designed for beach hunting and suitable for your area.

The Pulse Induction machines have their place for beach hunting but a high trash beach with deep iron is not it unless you want to spend all day digging wire and bobby pins. A machine with discrimination and the proper setting will have you digging coins and jewelry.

As a beginner, I would definitely pick a machine with some discrimination to eliminate the iron and junk and learn it and stay with it. It will produce for you. I purchased the Excalibur II 1000 last year and have no complaints, I modified it to a plugger straight shaft (travel model) and really enjoy using it on the beach. I can't say it is any better than my E-Trac except for being waterproof.

Good luck and welcome to the forums

P.S. Beach detecting is HIGHLY ADDICTIVE use caution and consider yourself warned.

The beaches of NJ can be challenging. Especially AC. I hunted Wildwood last fall around Thanksgiving. Man what a wide beach. Not only are the beaches challenging, but the competition is getting fierce with the price of gold. An Excalibur is one of the best water units out there. Fisher makes a good VLF water unit. A pulse detector can work on some of the beaches. But if that storm hits and you want to be part of it you will need discrimination. JMHO. And some of the Jersey beaches like AC a pulse unit just will not work. As already stated watch the videos from Surfdigger. I learned from watching them. Even the little stuff. Be friendly out there and fill your holes.

There are some beaches here that you can use a PI.....I do on some of them. A.C. is not one of them unless I go out in the water. Wet sand...no way. Too many targets as well as lots of iron in a lot of places. Then again, I have only hunted 2-3 spots whenever I go there, so there MAY be some spots where the iron is not abundant.

Some of the cleaner beaches as well as whenever there are sanded in conditions is always a great place to use the PI in the wet sand as well as the water.

My biggest question to the naysayers out there is.....Is there a problem with wanting to give back a little?.....I learned this hobby 35 years ago from seeing what others do and following their examples while in the field.....hopefully newbies to our great hobby /sport will now benefit from Videos that Myself and others like OBN post here and in other places.....It took me a long time to get proficient at this hobby.....do I view new competition as a threat?.....Not a chance !! I will always get more than my share out there...and I'll continue to have a blast doing it......And Bob....get out of this funk that you are in....you might see your finds improve and you'll have alot more fun doing it....JMHO....Brian

You DON'T view competition as a threat...neither do I. The other day I saw a guy with his son detecting. Should I have viewed them as a threat, or should I be happy that a guy is getting his son into the hobby ? Of course it is the latter for me. I was glad he was out there.

Keep doing what you are doing brother...I look forward to the videos and hey...maybe someday you will be in Hollywood !!!

You know I am serious and I get out plenty ,I don't care were anyone goes because ,I know how good I am,I don,t have to make videos about stuff it takes 30 years to learn to feel good about myself.Good luck with ur movies,I prefer to help people one on one.Your and you followers have yet contributed another source of wrecking this hobby.Only my opinion, but I'll be watchin guys like you.

Thanks for the messages and advice on the different detectors. I live in upstate NY and it is a good 5 hour drive to the Jersey shore. Up here we mostly detect Lake beaches. The best part of this hobby is some of the folks you meet out there. I was hoping to hear from this guy who helped my buddy and i with some pointers at the Jersey shore in late September. He told us about looking for shell lines and cutouts etc. It was no competion between any of us. We all had some finds. A perfect example of keeping your swing speed down: I was trying to cover too much area and went over a spot and the guy who was giving us some pointers came in behind me and was swinging his coil quickly also- nothing. My buddy comes in behind both of us with a more controlled swing and hits a large gold chain and pendant. Even if your first thought is darn i just went over that spot, it is all good. I am doing more travelling now and went down to a small beach at the Chesapeake Bay a couple of weeks ago. There was a lot of iron and wasnt hitting much until I hit a Buffalo nickel with the date on it. I then hit what I believe is a large cent but it has so much encrustation on it that i dont know if I will ever really know. Whats up with old coins on the beach? Didnt expect this.

You probably are a good hunter and do help people "one on one' and that is your chioce. The folks that you help really appreciate your advice I am sure. Other "good" detectorists prefer to make "TIPS VIDEOS" and "INSTRUCTIONAL VIDEOS" to help the newer folks find some treasures. That is their choice to help others. JMHO, but neither method is wrong and deserving of harsh feedback. The "source of wrecking this hobbie" started a long time ago when different manufacturers started making better and better detectors......not the education of how to use them from either format of "one on one" instruction or videos. I do like your last point of "Only my opinion, but I'll be watchin guys like you" ....is a really great idea! Just about all of the videos posted by folks like Surfdigger, OBN and many others, have a lot of good information, different techniques and advice for newbies. And some "good" hunters might learn something as well. ....ya never know. HH Gold Nuggets :wiggle:

Lotta Old beach in the area that have bit the dust over the years because of the Bay Bridge, pollution, progress...What you found must have got tossed up from the storms of resent. Most Beach's are private now in the Bay area and the only way you can detect them is to know a local, or come in from the water. I've got a growing list of about 2o now from the late 1800's to the late, 1960's and about 12 that were sold by the state to the local communities ................as you found, Lotta great stuff to be found still.......

Your right sorry for the harsh words SD

I have learned a bunch from SD's videos. How to read a beach and hunting patterns to name a few. But I also was reminded of the little stuff. Even though your on the beach still fill your holes. Be nice to fellow hunters. Show your junk and prove how we help clean the beach. I agree that competition is increasing probably because of gold and silver prices. Especially this time of year when getting in the water is pretty much out of the question. But mother nature changes things pretty often to make areas huntable again. And in the summer months you can always hunt the water and there is enough of that for everyone.
