I was privileged to meet up with 2 Forum members this weekend; Chillyhiker and SRC1, SRC1 being my best friend who we have been metal detecting since we were teenagers. Chillyhiker has an Explorer II as well as myself. SRC1 has a GTI 1350, but will be buying an Etrac or Explorer SE Pro soon!!
We went to a college area which was founded in 1781. This is the area from an earlier post where I found a 1861 seated dime with a couple of holes.
We were there a short while when Chillyhiker yelled and said "I have silver"!! Looks like a quarter. We went over and sure enough there was a 1908d Barber quarter. It was pretty dark and he run his probe and there were more signals. We looked in the hole and out came 2 wheat pennies. Looks like the pennies were sitting on the quarter. I posted 2 pictures of the coins.
Being pumped up now we went back to searching. I went near the area where I found the previous seated dime to see if I missed anything. Got a reading which I thought was maybe a wheat penny. Dug in and about 5 inches down I check the hole with the probe and it went off and I saw silver rim. I pulled out the coin and when looking I stated to dance!!
I saw it was another seated dime. I yelled to the others and we looked at the dime and saw it was a beautiful 1853 Seated dime with arrows!!!
After we admired the coin off we went again. Looks like the good coins were found early. I was able to come up with an 1899 Indian Head and a 1920s Buffalo nickel which was in pretty nice shape. I had an interesting signal which I was just not sure what it was, It was left on the screen but below pennies. So I dug in and was surprised with a 3 ring civil war bullet which looked like was worn as jewelry!! Pays to dig all signals on the right side of the screen.
I hope Chillyhiker will post his finds. SRC1 ended up with 3 quaters, 3 dimes, 1 wheat, and a few Memorials. I ended up with 1 seated dime, 3 dimes, 1 Buffalo, 1 Indian Head, 9 Wheat-1910, 1918, 1935, 1940, 1942, 1955, 1956d, 1957, and 1957d, and 13 Memorials and bullet.
Looking forward to more outing with the Boys and going back to this area again. Below are a few pictures.
