guess i was wrong. i've been busier than ever. to everyone collectively-- congrats on your finds! so many good posts over the last month or so. i did manage to hunt a few days ago and found my first large cent. it's holed and ain't real easy on the eyes...but its my first one. its 184? somethin'. i've been trying to clean 'er up but you know how stubborn them old ladies can be. i pulled a few silvers too, but nothin' older than a '26 merc. i cant wait to go back. best luck hunting to everyone.

finally got some pics ready....i've been busy lookin' for work so i havent had much time to hunt. i'm also goin to get some education while it is available. wish someone would pay me to metal detect! that would be a killer job!

Nice job! Looks like that Large Cent was very important to someone at one time. I'm guessing the hole near the rim was for sewing the coin inside clothes. Seems pointless to sew a penny inside clothes today so you don't lose it. However back in the 1800's when the average weekly wage was about $16, a penny bought a lot more than it does today. Good find with a neat story!

Nice Large Cent !

I've had good luck cleaning my LC's by heating an ounce or two of Hydrogen Peroxide almost to the boiling point in a small plastic container - then dropping the coin in - you might have to do this a few times if the coin has a lot of crud on it - then if you get lucky - you should be able to read the rest of the date.

Good Luck ! --- Mark
