Finally got a minute to write something, have been real busy this week.
Well it all started Sunday, had to work of course, but after 8 hours of work got to go out for a couple of hours of detecting with my good friend Kenny. I ended up finding four indian heads and when I was leaving the guy from across the street came over to chat...the usual, what did you find, how much does a detector cost etc. After filling him in he told me I should try the house next to his across the street, it was due to be torn down and was totally gutted, just the frame standing. It was city owned and on the short list for demolition, so I told him I would get over there as soon as I could and would check it out. Tuesday was the day, made arangements with the wife so I could have some extra time to hunt. Called Kenny but he said it was too hot, the temp was 94 and kinda sticky but this might be my only chance at this place so a little heat didn't detur me.
I started my hunt in the front yard, it was small and didn't have anything worthwhile in it. I moved to the side of the house and saw the sidewalk to the back door had been ripped out, that looks like a good place to start. About two feet from the end of the sidewalk I got a good signal, 10/49, mmmm maybe a silver coin or ring. Took a small plug and turned it over and the first thing I saw was the green marble, cool, then I saw it...the rim of a large silver coin...Yes! it was a walking half. I hadn't found one of those for a long time so it made my day. Of course I got out my Sunray Probe and checked the hole...yes!...two mercs, this is going to be a great day, even if I didn't find anything else. I kept going down the strip where the sidewalk was and bang, quarter signal, this time it was several silver quarters instead of clad and a bunch of mercs to boot. That was when I knew the construction guys spread out a cache when they were working. I started real slow sweeps from there and got a weird signal, sounded good but couldn't get a pinpoint, Xed it and took a big plug. When I flipped the plug it was packed with silver qaurters and dimes...just sticking out the bottom...WOW...never seen anything like it! From there on it was just Sunray probe on my hands and knees till I recovered everything. Had to do a fist pump when I pulled the dollar, only my second one in the last 15 years.
After clearing a area about a foot wide by foot and a half long of over 20 silvers I was feeling a bit drained. I got up to sweep the surrounding area and just as I finished digging one last straggler dime a guy in a pickup pulls up. An older gentleman, he hurried over and told me that he was working the day they pulled the porch off the back of the house. Apparently the boss was running the backhoe and when he tore the porch off and dragged it out he busted open a gallon jar full of silver coins. The boss jumps off the machine scoops up all the silver and puts it all in the truck, aparently not sharing a single dime with the guy now talking to me. He wanted to know if I had found anything...I told him a couple of silver dimes and showed him one and some clad...I never show anybody a good find when out detecting...they tend to get squirly and suddenly think it's theirs. I thanked him for the info, and he said I should move all the wood along the house and check there. I was beat, but determined to at least move some of it. I moved about half a big pile and started to check along the strip I uncovered...nothing...just hundreds of nails. I called it a day and vowed to come back with a rake, to rake up all the nails.
Wednesday I made a beeline for the place with my trusty rake in tow. I moved all the wood and raked along the house down to the dirt...ended up finding a qurter and a merc in the indent where I assume the jar sat and one merc in stuff I raked up...nothing else.
Thats the story...one more thing...I texted Kenny after every good find...I told him to get over here to help out...but he was firmly planted on the couch. He could have had some of that loot. Still kicking himself.
Joe
