I am now getting the feeling that every hunt might be my last in 2009. While it's supposed to be nice tomorrow, I have plans that are going to keep me from detecting. Weather guys say more seasonal weather (cold and wet) coming in some time around Thursday. I have a tradition of detecting on Thanksgiving so hopefully that will work out again this year. I save this one site for Thanksgiving every year. It is a good silver producer.

Today it warmed up around noon. I headed to a site I haven't been to in 6 months. The place is like a swamp all the time. Coins are all very deep even modern stuff. First two hours I found loads of clad, especially many very corroded quarters. After a quick break I was thinking about what I might post about this hunt. As I dug what I was sure was another 7 inch clad dime I decided I was going to belly-ache about how much silver jewelry I found last November and how little silver jewelry I am finding this November. Of course that target turned out to be a silver ring. I swear you can't make this stuff up. Next target was the sterling St. Michael medal. Then back to clad. I was keeping a rough coin count in my head and I had this idea that I wanted to hit 130 coins for the day. I got to coin 121 and then had a nice surprise of a of 10 coin quarter spill. I was almost sure it was going to be a roll of quarters but it was only 10. Don't bother counting my clad. I was 10 coins off in my count and found a nice total of 121. Only 14 pennies in all that mess too. Plus the key, arcade token, earring, and what might be a door knob. 3.5 hours total hunting.

One interesting note. I've found a lot of silver religious medals this year. Three were of Archangels named in the Bible. St. Michael, St, Rafael, and St. Uriel. The Bible only names four so I'm only missing St. Gabriel. They are amongst my favorite finds of the year.

Since it's been a while I am going to mention that paper towel again. It's been my faithful companion for 3 months now. The cardboard underneath it even longer.

I love it when you hit those coin spills. wasn't familiar with 2 of those angels being named in the Bible Chris. You learn something new every day.

I just looked it up and I think I might have been wrong. Uriel wasn't mentioned in the Bible but was mentioned in a few non-Canonical books. I was relying on memory and someplace in the deep recesses of my mind was the fact that the four named Archangels were Gabriel, Michael, Raphael, and Uriel. Uriel is venerated by some churches I suppose beacause I found him on a medal. Maybe Anglican.

well done cwilk ,, how many hours did you hunt for?,, I'm looking forward to our winter sowe can hunt all day hope to get out to some old pub sites from the late 1800s.. we could go now but the heat in the middle of the day would be a killer at these places,, so we will just bide our time until it gets cooler and keep hitting a few local spots for the next few months.

cheers Roger,,HH

Saint Michael is the patron saint of police and fire fighters, hard to find in any jewelry store my wife had to order mine

Thanks Bossman. Everytime I find a religious medal honoring a Saint that I haven't found before I do a little research. I knew Michael was an Archangel but I haven't gotten around to seeing who he/she is the patron of. Might have been lost by a cop or firefighter which makes it even more special to me.

Chris

I see he is also the Patron Saint of warriors, particularly paratroopers and fighter pilots, Germany, Brussels, and chivalry.

Nice hunt. I get about an hour after work to hunt these days before it's black out, and a snowfall overnight remined me that I have a lot of coins to clean and roll.

I think its kind of old too. Marked sterling and it was deep as all get out. Maybe 7 inches. It is heavily tarnished and bent. I'll fix it and clean it up over the winter with the rest of my rings.

Chris

Chris in finding those religious icon may mean someone is telling you something

only 14 pennies in all those coins, i find that incredible. were you passing on digging those? stupid question, knowing you dig everything, great hunt.

bill:smoke:

I don't know where the pennies were. I dug plenty of dimes and on the 2500 dimes frequently hit on the penny notch. I was digging everything and about 2 hours in I stopped digging C sized targets. Then with about half an hour to go I was only digging bell-tones ize B or A. FWIW, the ring hit on copper penny notch.

Chris

It can be a bit of an interesting subject on it's own. Probably Roman Catholic in origin. The Anglicans seem to adapted many of the Catholic church beliefs. The start of the Catholic church is interesting too, but that's a whole other subject not for this forum.
