Big money for one thin dime

Just happened to see the headlines on Yahoo today :
1873 CC dime sells for $1.6 million at auction.
It looked too clean to be dug; but still... what would a nice dug one be worth ?????

Good post, hard to believe that much money for only one dime, and also I really love both your handle(name) and avitar!

Here is a better look at that dime with a view on both sides:

1873 dime sells for $1.6 million at Philadelphia auction

P.S. I wish I have more information about these coins below meaning their value, the story about when & how they were found, and by who?:
Oldest identifiable coins found :
1700 William III ,1732 George II half pennies , and 1747 Spanish 'bit'

wonder why the owner of the coin would pay an auction house such a huge fee to auction it off when I am sure the owner of the coin could have advertised it to draw a collector on their own?.....someone with enough money to pay that for the coin would surely have Lawyers and "finders" aware of such opportunitys,
Lawyers are paid on "retainers" and "finders" work on a "finders fee").....I am sure a finders fee would be less than what the auction house charged?..

An auction can often cause a bidding war resulting in a higher price that has the potential to offset the fees involved. They know to whom to advertise a piece such as that better than most sellers. A transaction that large would be done by check or wire transfer and who wants to be scammed on a fake check from the private sector. Also the seller can remain anonymous and avoid attention or personal dealings with possibly shady characters.
