Bill_S's program is a nickel magnet

Agseeker

New member
Loaded Bill_S's "trashy park" pattern on my E-trac earlier in the week and had my first chance to use it this weekend for about 5 hours. Out of 26 coins found 7 were nickels; that's about 27%. Prior to adding his pattern my nickel percentage was only 2.5%. Granted, with only 5 hours using the pattern, it may be too soon to tell what the long term percentage will be. But an improvement from 2.5 % to 27% seems pretty significant. I did make a small change to his program and modified the nickel range to CO 12-16. Nickels seem to fall more in that range in my area.

using his program nickels come in at a solid 13-13 for me........NGE and wheats at 7-38.

Good point Agseeker. In other areas the nickel notch may have to be tweaked a little. You would not want to open it too much or you will start getting a lot of trash. It works perfect in my area........;o)

ok here is my question, the ONLY time nickels are 12-12, or 13-13 for me is when they are shallow modern nickels which I don't care about, unless I am looking for gold.

I am after the OLD buffalo and V nickels, now those are all over the chart like I have said a million times, if your disc is this tight I promise you, that you will MISS the old deeper nickels. I started finding a LOT more nickels when I OPENED up my nickel area a LOT.

I'd like to see a video of someone digging 7-8" deep nickels with this program.

And please don't take this wrong, this is not critisism towards Bill's program. If it works for you, awesome. But for me it would not work.

The etrac is very versatile and can be tweeked to fit almost anyone's hunting needs

The idea behind this was to create a pattern for real trashy parks. I did not want to dig a ton of trash signals. It sounds like a lot of your older nickel signals would fall into the trash range and then yes you would miss them with this pattern. I almost 100% of the time hunt in public parks and places like that. It is a lot differnet than hunting on private property, for the most part. I know private property can be trashy too but not to the magnituded of the places I hunt. If I were in a less trashy area I would probably use Andys program and usually do when I am in a place like that. I know I have dug some nickels at the 6 inch mark. I found a bunch of older nickels when me and Ray went out. I dont take any critisism at all with your post. If thats how your nickel signals are in your area then you are better off not running a tight pattern.

This is the pattern that I have been using in trashy parks for a time, it seems to do the same thing that Bill S pattern but is more open for nickels.

I loaded up Bill_S's program and ran through an area I've heavily hunted before and ended up with 2 buffalos, a war nickel, a canadian nickel, 2 indians, a barber dime and a whole bunch of jeffersons. Great program for super trashy places! The buffalos were probably the deepest at maybe 3 to 4 inches.

Is everyone just loading that pattern with a coins program or are they using something else?

Probably easiest since there is so much discrimination it to press your quickmask button, then discriminate out everything quickly then load that in smartfind. Then go to menu and edit it accepting 01-11 through 01-15 lines down through 20-11 through 20-15 and 01-32 through 01-49 down all the way through 20-32 through 20-49 in my version or I should say my hunting partner Doug who originally suggested this last year for hunting a super trashy site which produce double digit silvers for us. This version is a bit more open than Bill's with more "wiggle room" around the nickel slot. But you can tweak if for your own sites after a bit of usuage.

To further expound on the version of the "trashy park" program that I posted let me say the following.

1. Would I have made the same finds using a more open pattern?
Of course I would have!

2. Why would I use such a tight pattern if I would find the same things in a more open pattern?

This program was devised to hunt a large area 20+ acres where silver coins were sometimes only an inch or two deep.
An extremely trashy site that once had apartments and was torn down and consequentialy much aluminum bits, plumbing fixtures and other assorted
junk competed for your attention.

3. If a more open pattern would find the same things and probably more why use the extreme discrimination?

The main reason was so we could cover as much ground as possible, shooting the "silver fish" in the barrell because the area is going to be completely
renovated this coming year and will not be available to hunt again.

4. Would I use this program again?
Well maybe but only under such circumstances. Sort of extreme circumstances require extreme measures!

But everyone use what they feel comfortable with, I posted the picture with the pattern I used just to reccomend if you use it open up the nickles more since they do bounce around alot.

I'm with Goes4ever when looking for coins. If that nickle isn't just a few inches it will be all over the scale.

When I hunt our city park I don't bother with anything less than 6" deep. I have dug a few deep buffalo nickles but it was because the depth was right on a crappy signal, or it was in the same hole as a piece of copper or silver. The real problem is that this 128 year old park is extremely trashy so using an open pattern is really not an option.

The only V Nickel I have ever found came in as a 12-12 in a farmers field
was it fairly shallow? Because most coins I find in fields here are 3-4" max

As I recall it was within five inches

I am in a slump and am looking for potential sites to detect
I would love to find another old nickel soon

Just a little tip so you don;t end up wasting an hour editing.

wile editing (DO NOT BUMP THE NOISE CANCELLATION BUTTON) or you will be starting over.

After you have edited the screen the way you want (HIT THE DETECT BUTTON) then the right arrow to load to smart find, Then menu save select pattern.
If you do not hit the (DETECT BUTTON) AFTER EDITING AND BEFORE SAVING YOU WILL BE DOING IT ALL AGAIN.

Speaking from actual experience.

Trying to save the frustration i went Thur when editing i wiped it out 5 times man i was hot!!!

I loaded Bell-Two's way and yours to compare the two.

i like to do just the opposite sometimes if there is a ton of trash and iron like most sites i run almost open screen TTF or Andy's prog and load yours into quickmask to check to see if it still hits most of the time i only have and hour to hunt and have to make the best of my time but on the weekends i dig any repeatable above iron.

I lost it probably 12 times before I figured it out. Then I saw the posts above and didn"t feel so bad because thru all my trial and errors I have a much better how the functions work on the E-Trac. This is what I call Learning curve Reduction time

I tried this program the other day at a 1936 WPA site that we have hit 3 times before and pulled a ton of clad. One area was just so full of trash that I finally just took the easy and left the rest with the 10x12 SEF coil. We have only ever gotten 1 wheat cent here before. With this pattern loaded I hit the worst part of the park first and was amazed. Ended up with 80 coins 28 of them where nickels, and 4 wheats. I just never heard them for all the trash. This is a great program. We have been hitting heavy clad areas and once it is gone the good stuff starts to show up. Thanks to Bill S for all the effort and hitting this area again Monday for the good stuff before the snow buries it.
