ot permision to detect this piece of property and headed out around 6 o'clock this evening. This property goes back to the 1840's or so I was told, but I wasn't really expecting to find much there since this general area hasn't yielded much.
First signal I get as I step onto property is a bit deep (6"- 8" range) and is ringing up almost like a quarter - nice clean hit in all directions. To my surprise out pops a brown disc about the size of a LC, but I cannot recognize the images. Showed it to my wife who just droped me off and she thinks she sees a date of 1830-something.....copper maybe?
After cleaning with a little soap and water there's an image of a turtle with a box on his back on one side and donkey on the other. On the donkey side it reads "I FOLLOW IN THE STEPS OF MY ILLUSTRIOUS PREDECESSOR". On the turtle side it reads "EXECUTIVE EXPERIMENT 1837 FISCAL AGENT". Turns out to be a 1837 "hard times" token is very nice shape with lots of detail....I saw one on the internet go for $460! My first token or coin from this era of the 1800's.
Two signals later in approx the same area, I get a shallow 4" cent-like hit.....figured what the heck and dug. Out pops a thin dirty disc and after dabing it a bit it turns out to be silver! I don't recognize the image either. After cleaning at home it turns out to be a well worn 1 Reale dated 1779! My first Reale ever and well into the 18th century!
I move to the front of the house and get a signal that only repeats along one axis, but I decide to dig. Out pops a huge copper disc about the size of a half dollar which turned out to be a nicely decorated colonial flat button with shank still attached. It features two concentric circles of dots with engraved leaves between them. My first colonial flat button!
Then get a junky hit in the pull tab area, but at this point I'm digging everything. Out pops an 1863 IH fatty!! Only my second fatty ever and this one looks to be in pretty good condition though crusted with a thin layer of green that seems to be flaking off.
I dug a couple of other "relics" that may have some promise too, but need to take a closer look.
Wife came back to pick me up after grocery shopping about an hour an a half later! I had a real difficult time getting in the car and leaving, but I'll be back there 4 sure! Sorry no pics yet, but will post some soon.
