Bugs, sweat and dirty pennies.

Since we were finally blessed with some rain and slightly "cooler" temps (It was only 84 today :)). I made my way out to an old picnic area for some detecting. This place is about as far off the beaten path as you can get, so just about everything I dig there dates from the late 1800's to about 1925. The bugs were thick and the overgrown grass was thicker, but I managed a few nice finds. Total time spent hunting was about 3 1/2 hours and I ended up with 3 Indians (1865, 1888, and 1889) 2 Wheaties (1911, 1919D), a 1909 V Nickel and a 1908 Barber dime. I also found a small gold plated pin, and a gold plated back off a button which was made by Krementz.

As you can see the soil is not very copper friendly  The Indians were totally encrusted, but it only took about 60 seconds in boiling peroxide to destroy my hopes of one of them being a 1877

Very nice hunt. I'll bet you feel better now.

I'm having great luck cleaning pennies by placing them on tin foil in a pyrex dish adding boiling water and then Arm & Hammer Washing soda. Wait for it to quit bubbling and take the pennies out. The dirt and stains come right off. Green oxidation is another story.

I only used the peroxide until I was able to determine they were common dates, perhaps I'll try the washing soda method on a few of them as well. :detecting:

Also, thanks for cleaning up my photos.

Nice finds! Looks like a great place to re-visit! I love those types of spots. Thanks for the pictures.

Beautiful finds ZOFCHAK, I've been wanting to hunt my favorite spot all week but there has been an arts and crafts fair set up there. It leaves today so maybe tonight.

Congrats on the awesome finds,
Moose
