Buying a rechargeable battery pack from Minelab? READ FIRST!!! :minelab:

Ok, I have seen people buying the rechargeable packs from Minelab at ridiculous prices, a 1500MaH pack for $70?! 1800 MaH for $100!?!?!?! No, just NO! It's RIDICULOUS!

Here's my solution and probably the one that lots of people do, you can buy any normal alkaline battery pack from Minelab for around $17 from any Minelab dealer, get a rechargeable battery with charger combo for $30 like this one from Energizer:

http://www.amazon.com/Energizer-15-Minute-Battery-Charger/dp/B0000DIIAS/ref=sr_1_3?ie=UTF8&s=electronics&qid=1206871814&sr=1-3

And it's a 15 MINUTE charger! In other words if you forgot to charge your batteries, just wait 15 minutes and you're good to go! Comes with Four 2200MaH batteries included which brings me to the next part since you need Eight for the Explorer, for $11.87 you get Four more batteries of 2500MaH (Remember, the more MaH the longer the battery will last)!

http://www.amazon.com/Energizer-NH15BP-4-Rechargeable-Batteries-Four-pack/dp/B00000J47L/ref=pd_bxgy_e_text_b

So for a total of $59 you got a charger which will charge rechargeable batteries in 15-Minutes or less, they're NiMH which means no "memory" on the batteries, charger will work with any other brand of rechargeable batteries, you get 2200MaH & 2500MaH batteries, and an Alkaline pack, so if the batteries die on you, you can just swap with some fresh Alkalines OR buy 8 more rechargeable batteries and carry them with you charged just in case.

So basically you're not stuck with one pack that takes a LONG time to charge and you can swap the rechargeable.

Yeah I sound like an advertisement, but it's something for people to take into consideration, it's easier, it's cheaper and it's much more reliable. :minelab::thumbup:

Ace, that sounded great till I read the reviews on the same page.....Not sure I would go for it. My Explorer XS battery I bought in 2001 I think, is still going strong.....Why would I want any thing other than great performance and lasts long time. For a few extra bucks, In the long run you will save. Just My opinion....

are worthless in my experience. I bought one of those with the AA rechargeables a couple years ago for my digital camera.... what a piece of crap! Just like the bad reviews in that link, my charger wouldn't charge the batteries most of the time. I used my old slow charger with the energizer batteries with much better success. I would like to know if anyone has taken a "dead" rechargeable battery pack to a place like Batteries Plus to have them rebuilt with brand new batteries? Batteries Plus quoted me a price for rebuilding battery packs with brand new 2400 mah NMh batteries for about 1/2 the cost of a new battery pack from Minelab. This was for Explorer and Excalibur battery packs... I'm considering this option with a couple packs I have and was curious if anyone else has gone this route and what their success was? Thanks and HH, Mike.

I had one for over a year and it was excellent, however, I spilled soda all over it and ruined it so I bought one of the Sony 15 minute charger, those are better because they give you 2500MaH batteries (4). =D

Remember, get the one you like the most, doesn't have to be a Energizer. I would go with Sony, it's $40 more or less, but it's the best one I've had. =) I just put the energizer because it was the cheapest @ $30.

Cheapest way to go, however watch the brand!! I use 2500mah by Energizer and they fit and work great in all my machines.

I just tried some Duracell 2650mah and they are just just a wee bit longer in length and will not fit the battery pack:ranting:

Also most of you should know that a FAST charge will burn up your batteries quicker then a normal charge, some depending on brand will cut your battery life by 50%, a fast charge = HEAT and should only be used on rare occasions.

A slow charge is best for super battery life.

And yup, the factory price of a NEW rechargeable pack is really crazy:thumbdown: way cheaper to buy your own batteries and a spare battery housing or two and use!!

Good Hunting!!

Tenergy's can also buy them online pretty cheap. I was amazed how long they lasted, compared to the battery that came with my detector. Of course that has seen more than a couple recharge cycles. I bought the MAHA pack recharger. Seems like I get 20 hours or more per pack.

I use a 3300 MaH battery I bought off Ebay . Have used them in all my detectors for about three years now. Very good success with them as well. The charger I use was $14.00 on sale at Harbor Frieght Reg. $24.95....I own three of them now and they too have been really nice. Slow charges at about 8 hours with 4 AA Batteries. It will also charge 9 volts as well.
I still have my minelab batteries as well. But these 3300 MaH batteries do last a lot longer, so at times I do use both with my Explorer. Happy hunting to all this year and I hope to see you in the fields, valleys, and byways.
