California Quail

These are wild gamebirds, but the ones that hang around town eventually become fairly tame. I have a small group that comes by, almost like clockwork, every morning to look for the cracked corn that I spread out in my backyard for them. I like to sit on my deck while I'm drinking my coffee and watch them, but only when the weather is warm enough. Otherwise, I watch them through my sliding glass door. I think the males are pretty proud of themselves and they like to pose for photos.

Thanks, Dave. I'm still processing that batch of shots with the wagon wheel. I'll post one after I figure out which one is the best. I found that old wagon miles from nowhere and I had to wonder what became of the people who were driving it.

What a beautiful Quail. You say they're game birds. Is there a season for them or are they so abundant that they're game anytime? He's sure a beautiful specimen. Thanks for the stunning photo.

They're fairly common out here, Nancy, but there is a hunting season on them from mid-September until sometime in January. I can't remember the exact dates.

I think it is neat how they will come to your yard to eat the cracked corn. Thanks for sharing! :clapping: Kelley (Texas) :)
