Can Someone Help?

I have an Explorer II and love it...Although as of late I've been getting lots of uncontrolled chatter or false signals. I've tried everything I could think of and it's not working. I can still use the detector but the with the chatter and the screen jumping all over the place it's annoying, not only that but is that having in effect on the detector as far as working properly in the field? Any suggestions or help would be appreciated.
thanks,
Jim from Mass

Next couple of things to check if you already haven't. 1) Try a factory reset of the machine to the default settings...2) coil might have gone bad..or cable shorting out. I'm sure the possibilities are endless...sorry to say...but it's a start.

Thank you all for the help, It's definitely a start, I tried a factory reset already, I will try another coil. Bryce, is it safe to try the coil from my 1st Explorer? Maybe the whole lower section?
My sensitivity I usually have around 22. I've tried it in every direction. How do I put it in semi-auto vs. manual? When I do factory reset the sensitivity goes to 16.
I appreciate the help, you guys are the best.
Thank you,
Jim

As long as you don't have the sense cranked up in a noisy environment, most likely cause is bad coil connection. Trying another coil is the easiest, but the problem may still be on the detector side of the connection. Try connnecting the coil without the upper rod, so you can put more or less tension on the connection. See if you can make it worse or go away. I've had to resolder the connections a couple of times. Otherwise perhaps a trip to minelab.

Have you tried disconnecting the cable from the detector then turning it on without the coil connected? I get occassional chatter from bad batteries or battery connection. might try cleaning the connectors. is it hooked up to a X-1?

THANK YOU FOR THE HELP!!!:clapping:

Okay...we've narrowed it down, It's definitely related to the coil or the connections. I took my XS coil and attached it to my Explorer II and BINGO!!!!, It was so nice to hear just the thresh hold and not the chatter. So then just to be sure....I took my Explorer II coil and put it on my Explorer XS and there was chatter. I can't wait to get out and use a nice quiet detector that only sounds off when you hit a target!!!
Now to get it fixed so I have my backup detector. Happy Hunting all.... and again, Thank you so much for the suggestions and the help!!!
