Cell phones, do they interfere?

I usually hunt with my phone in my back pocket. Have any of you noticed any interference while carrying a cell phone or is this fine? Thank you. -Marc

Mine doesn't seem to interfere with the SE Pro.

Mine DOES interfere when I'm on an actual call (or it's ringing, etc...)

One time I got a cell-phone call while I was detecting, and thought I could continue swinging, while I was talking, at the same time (ie.: with the flip phone tucked under one of my ear muffs). I was swinging along and nothing sounded good. Finally got a signal that I wanted to investigate further, but just stood there, waiting for my wife to finish gabbing. When the call was over, I swung over it again, and noticed that the signal cleaned up dramatically. That told me that the cell-phone call was disrupting the quality/depth of the signal.

Not sure about simply being in "stand-by" mode though! I suppose the phone is constantly seeking cell-phone tower signals, right? Thus perhaps there is subtle communication between the phones to the towers? I dunno. I suppose a way to test this would be to find a really weak signal, and make mental note of the quality/clarity of the signal. Then turn off your cell-phone, and swing over it again. Does it clean up better? If so, perhaps there's cross-talk going on?

Thanks for your replies guys. Its much appreciated. I will test both with and without my phone and see if there are any differences. As you stated Tom, cell phones are constantly doing things in the background and my question really was if these background actions would interfere. I would think that a call would but I was not sure of background data transfer causing any problems or not. Ill test cell phone effects next time I go out hunting and let you know what I find. HH -Marc

Mine doesn't seem to bother my SE Pro. If it rings I usually answer it and stop hunting anyway, so interference then is not an issue.

Yes, please report back to the rest of us forumites the results. Find a weak signal, with a TID that won't lock on, etc... Then power down your phone, and try again. See if the signal gets any better. Also, just for kicks and giggles, try it with an actual in-progress phone call, and I bet that will really mess up the signal.

My droid interfiers with a DFX and an se pro. Voice or data, either is a problem. Get to leave it in the truck. :)

Marc Ive gotten chatter from mine when walking up on someone talking on a cellphone and just hit noise cancel which took care of it. Its not effected by my cellphone when not in use but on in my pocket though.
