Changing coils on a Cortes??

I'll do that when I hunt the wooded areas...which I hunt 90% of the time. The park I hunt I'll use disc mode. It's a 165 acre park that's been a park since 1865. Lots of crap in the ground.

Not to state the obvious, but we are Tesoro not Garret.
I would also like to state that back east or east of the Rockies, the ground is 95% mild. Factory preset machines work great out there. Cibola owners love and use them with no problems and claim its deeper that the Vaquero.
There are some exceptions to the rule as for as the 98% quote I made. Red clay areas, Culpepper VA and a few others.

I just don't understand it. For instance, you can get an Ace 250 which has a fixed preset ground balance and have no issues switching coils...many other detectors too.

I don't appreciate smart ass comments. I know you're not Garrett, curious why they can accomplish something you can't is all.

Let's keep it friendly and informative, guys. Fact is, as I mentioned a ways above, Garrett's presets are suseptible to the same problems as Tesoro's or any other companies. Garrett hasn't accomplished something Tesoro can't.

Maybe I should have word it better. What I meant was that I do not know how Garret works. I know how Tesoro's work and couldn't possibly tell you Garret business. This is a Tesoro Forum and I can talk about tesoro. Wasn't trying to upset you at all!

It's my understanding from what I have read that every major metal detector company's detectors with a preset ground balance, including Garrett, have the same exact results when switching coils. I switch coils all the time on my Tesoro detectors and have not noticed any difference in performance, but that doesn't mean that they're working at 100%. I just don't notice any difference, if there is any. But I don't switch to a larger coils either. I like smaller and lighter coils.:)

Roght Tabman, I'm not planning on using any bigger than stock coils. I have a cleansweep coil but in all honesty I will probably never use it as I mainly hunt for older, deeper coins. I have 4 smaller than stock coils for the Cortes that I will use 99% of the time.

Hi Michigan Jason,

My wife has the DeLeon and she just loves it in our mild soil here in Kansas, I bolted the 5.75 concentric coil on it and it is a good performer in a light package for her, plenty of depth too. I installed the Troy X 2 Super Seven coil on it awhile back.....Wow what a difference that made! Just great performance and nice separation too in a lightweight coil. I really like the Deleon, the little brother to the Cortes.

Garrett's ace 250 has preset ground balance...Same as your Cortes...If you don't notice any difference in swapping coils on the ace..You will not on the Cortes...All these machines with preset ground balance are set up the same way @ factory with a ferret rod....with exception to ground tracking or manual balance...As I stated before...The Cortes will work great in your soil...But I do not think anyone on this forum can convince you other wise...:beers:

I'm looking forward to using the Cortes, now just have to wait for this crappy snow to melt. I feel confident it will perform well for me with my variety of coils.

I know what ya mean.......we'll have a little way to go before we can go......just gives me more time to do some research and maybe do some mods..can't wait for the new season..wish ya luck...by the way..what part of Mi you from?

:wacko:so the answer to the original post is you do have to send it back to the factory every time you change coils
unless you live in a area with highly mineralized soil .

Haha, yeah that's basically what I've gathered from reading all the responses. Thank you very much to everyone who responded.

And make all of there models with ground balance. To be done with this issue. But then again detectorist will then complain and want a easy to operate non gb detector.I would not send my golden in to be tuned for another coil. This is hog wash.I would just buy a manual gb detector if i needed it.Tessoro may get feed up and take every non gb detector off the market and be done with this complaint. The compadre, cibola, golden, cortes, deleon, silver umax,GONE.Then you would hear,we want it back!

What they need are more multi tone machines.

I agree with (SpiritRelic) ....Tesoro offers us manual and fixed ground balances.....It shouldn't be that hard to choose....
