Chief of Indians !!

rayzhell (jr) and I decided to hit the old park again today.. We just had a nice rainfall over the last couple days, the first one in months.. We figured detecting should be good .. To us wet ground is better and it sure did pay off today... This is the same park we have found a 77 cc dime, 76 seated quarter, numerous indians and even a 1854 bowen and mcnamee token that we believe came out of Abraham Lincolns pocket.. Not to far from were Ray had found the token. he was swing in today and got a nice high signal.. Well at about 6-7 inches comes an indian head.. All he could make out was his nose.. Luckily we were only a few feet from the parks water fountain and did just a rinse .. Man, was Ray surprised when i told him that it was an 1877 indian head.. Sorry no reverse pictures yet we have it sitting in r.o. water now.. Thinking of sending it in as it sits.. Maybe let them clean it..

Super sweet!!! Looks like it's a beauty. Congratulations. And I thought only Digger was allowed to find those.:blink: Thanks for the story and picture.

Wow, awesome find! That one is on my bucket list before I die or get too crippled up to metal detect any more. Congratulations on your find. I'd go back and hit that place again and again.

MONSTER FIND! Congrats!

Congratulations on an excellent find. If that one don't make you do a happy dance, nothing will! My advice would be to not clean it. Rinse it and let it air dry, if anything. Then take it to a coin shop to have it sent in to be slabbed and graded.

I sent the one I found with the X-TERRA last November to PCGS, and they would not assign a grade, due to it being a dug coin. That patina that many of us find so attractive is considered "environmental corrosion" to the coin grading services. For $75.00, they certified it as Genuine and slabbed it. The second one I found this past July with my E-TRAC was sent to NGC and it isn't back yet. According to the coin shop who sent it in for me, NGC would provide a "details" grade, so it would be a generic "VF details" rather than the standard "VF35" etc. It would be a step above PCGS's "Genuine" designation. He also told me that there are some grading services who might assign a letter and number. But suggested that they were not as highly regarded to collectors. And a person is better off having PCGS or NGC slab it, and let a potential buyer determine the grade (and value, if you ever decide to sell it).

It may be more rare than previously believed........Mint records indicate that there should have been 852,500 of these minted. the typical die can strike about 200,000 coins. For a mintage of 4 times that amount we should see many more obverse and reverse dies. For circulations strikes, the Mint Report for 1878 states that 3 obverse dies and 6 reverse dies were made in 1877, but only 2 obverse dies and 1 reverse die were actually used. The remaining reverse dies were used in 1878. This is important, as one must ask where are the other coins? If they were struck with 1877 dates, we should find at least one example from a different reverse die. If the Mint Report is correct, and there is no reason to doubt it, then there is one obverse die used that we have not yet seen. It would be expected that if a new die was made for the 1877 issue it would have been a Bold N die. Since all 1877 Indian Cents except for Proofs are struck from a pre-1870 Shallow N die, it seems that there is a huge amount of coins missing.

And this........The 1877 Indian Head Cent is known as a key date coin of the series. There were 852,500 pieces reportedly produced for circulation, although Rick Snow* suggests that only 200,000 coins were struck. Whatever the number is, the coin is rare in all grades.

Again, congratulations on an excellent find. HH Randy

Wow, that's a AWESOME Injun find!! :yikes::clapping:

Congrats to your friend, Ray!!
Be very careful cleaning that coin....hundreds of dollars could be lost if cleaned incorrectly. I don't dig that many old coppers where I live, so I won't make any suggestions about self cleaning, but when in doubt, professional cleaning would be my choice on such a pricey copper.

Had to update this post I sent in this Indian head for conserving with NCS "NGC" I was so excited today, the mail lady brought me my box. It about killed me to wait a half hour for my son to get here, but i did it. lol, when he Finlay made it we were so excited to open the box being careful not to damage anything. we opened it and our jaws dropped NCS and there "PROFESSIONAL CONSERVING METHODS" totally destroyed my coin. it looks to me like they dipped it in acid and left it for way to long. i did a better job with distilled water and a light brushing with a soft makeup brush. this is outrageous. at the beginning of this post you see it right after it came out of the ground just rinsed off follow the link below and you will see it after my "conserving" lol, liberty is week but visible allot of detail left in the feathers and the horizontal bars mostly visible. i know this was not the greatest condition coin but it was acceptable. after NCS got there hands on it I have a pitted brown rusty blank all the detail in the feathers is gone liberty is history the whole shield is flat and it is barely if even worthy as a filler coin for an Indian set. sorry about the rant but this has been an extremely bad experience the only positive i can take from this is when they say don't clean coins in my opinion that goes for the so called professionals at NCS too.

Cosmic, It is so sad to see what they did to your 77 IH cent. My initial thought was that they sent you back a different coin. But in looking at the before and after pics, the same little mark is on the C in CENT is visible in both. For what it is worth, I found a little information on NCS service terms. I've pasted their website and the two paragraphs that might apply. Hopefully you insured it when it was sent in. I don't know if you'll get anything out of them. But it is sure worth a shot. Again, sorry to see the results of their so called "professional" services. And for what it is worth, thanks for making the post and showing us what they did. We've all learned a valuable lesson from your bad experience. Best of luck to you. Randy

It's a shame. You sure shared an important lesson for us all - Thank you.

Hope you recover some of the value, not to mention your costs.

WOW-WOW That is a great find. I checked my 2008 book and the worst condition showed $750. When people ask me about this hobby, I tell them that if you are out swinging, you just might find something good.

Always like those Indians.... Nice Find! and a rare one at that!!!! Congratulations!!!!!

SUPER WOW!hey great coin but 2 thumbs down to NGC,I think they are getting worse by the minute! they seem to just want your money!THEY should have maybe explained that it could poss. damage the coin?or let you know the consequence's before they perform any work, seems to me you are at the mercy of them just send them money and hope for the best mentality!!!I will never send them or my father or brother coins again!we have had more problems than it is worth then when we try to get an explanation from them they said EVERYONE expects to get rich from a coin, excuse me?no when we send in coins and pay top fee's we expect to know why the coin didn't meet the grade! not just you think your gonna get rich from a coin! beware of NGC! hey try ANACS they treat you with respect.
