Cleaned my first 1893 Barber Quarter

This quarter came out of the ground completely Black as if it had been in a fire. I took it to a coin dealer and he tried to dip it, but no luck. He said to just keep it as is. So I took it home and made a chain of paperclips then attached the quarter to it and boiled it for about 20 minutes in Baking soda. Not the best way to handle silver but if anyone can tell me of a better way I'd appreciate it. Remember it was completely black and you couldn't see any detail.
