Coil pricing:ranting:

I was looking at K co web site and noticed that several Tek coils cost more than there cousin Fisher coils.

The Greek series use the same coils as the G2, GB and F5 with screw type connector. G2,GB are designed for DD coils

---------------------Tek coil -------------------------------- Fisher
10 in con---------- 179 ------------REG ----------------- 159
--------------------- 169 ----------SALE------------------ 135
5 DD ---------- ---- 159 ---------- REG -------------------- 159
---------------------- 142 ----------- SALE ------------------- 135
11DD----------------- 199 ----------- REG -------------------- 199
--------------------- 179 ------------ SALE-------------------- 169

So if you don't mind a Fisher sticker on your coil , it could save you a few bucks.

Why the pricing variants? I have no clue. But you cannot use any other First Texas coils on the T2. The T2 coils are made specifically to work ONLY on the T2.

I will probably never use all my coils but I went ahead and pulled the trigger on a T2 SE with all three DD coils: 5, 11 and 15. I am sure the 15 will get a lot of dust but the price of coils individually was silly. It was much cheaper just to get them all packaged together. At least I have a lot options whenever my skill set catches up to my imagined needs.

The price chart refers to the Greek series and the GB,F5 that use the same coils .

As you can see the F5 coil is less money on all pricing and by a lot on the 10in concentric coil .

a guess would be a "difference" in internal circuitry
which could "possibly" make the tek coils more expensive to produce,
or maybe the windings in the coils themselves. just a shot in the dark!

Well that is a very dark room your shootin' in...there is no internal circuitry that makes them any better or more suited. I've heard that rumor and the other that was passed around that the 5 x 10 Gold Bug Series will not work because of a extra "chip" that Tek has...bull. I have a Gamma and have a GB 5 x 10 coil and it works perfect...absolutely no issues. It's based on sales and what's hot. More customers are leaning on and buying Tek's than Fishers and those Tek buyers are buying extra coils. And they don't want to mix brands even if it's only a cosmetic decal. To me the larger and more real and confusing question is why does a 19kHz coil work on a 7.9kHz machine ? I've asked many people of knowledge and they can't say....all they can say is that it does and some things are unexplainable. Can some one explain this to me ? And if the 5 x 10 works will any other G2 and Gold Bug coils work on any of the Greek series? If not...why not ? Don't tell me it because the frequency is different...I covered that already.....Happy Trails, Woodstock

The problem with "rumors" is that too many people can't distinguish them from gospel, and start treating them as fact. Glad to see Woodstock squelched that one like an elephant stepping on a jellyfish! Regarding the other things Woodstock said, I'm not interested in getting dragged into the details, but he has a fairly good grasp of the big picture.

Here's the Dave J. commentary on all this.

1. Fratbros and GB/G2 DD searchcoils are the same thing physically, apart from labelling. (Concentrics are a different matter, please read the stickies.)

2. There's a lot of urban mythology kicking around in beeperlandia about searchcoil designs and frequency compatibility. That mythology, like most, originally had some basis in facts, although not nearly as much as ya might think. Meanwhile over the last 30 years, the real world changed faster than the mythology did.

3. There are perfectly good reasons for price differentials for products that are physically similar, but which are marketed through different distribution channels and therefore have different distribution costs as well as playing slightly different roles in the respective business strategies. Nobody at the factory is going to apologize for that-- thank goodness!

i like the part about "playing different roles in respective business strategies!"
set my "imagination" on fire with that one!..just sayin'

Well that was a "fire in the rumor mill" that needed to be extinguished before it burned out of control. I HATE RUMORS ! And if a few Jellyfish were harmed in the process it was for the benefit of all of us. I think if I was rich I'd buy two just to cut apart and post just to prove my point. Here's a point to add weight to my assumptions. By now most of us know that the Fisher F2 and Fisher F4 share the same boards and the only difference is the options. Has anyone noticed that the base line Tek Alfa has the same face plate as the Gamma ? Sure you have and they look like twins, there even the Bounty Platinum that has the same look on it's face. I never looked inside but I have owned a Alfa and I was very impressed on it's depth. I 'm willing to bet the Alfa through Gamma or just the Alfa and Gamma share the same basic board with different arrangements inside controlling the detectors options and slightly better depth. I can honestly say that I had the Omega as well and I can see any difference in depth and like the Gamma because it runs more stable. Now look at the BH Platinum. It shares a Omega type pole and looks like a Gamma as well. It might even have the same basic board. It has a different option set up and is a bit different in that way only. I like it, but I liked the extra options I got from a Gamma and now you can get a BH cheaper BUT it did retail at about $550....now on sale for $299. Another thing I didn't like was the push in plug on it.
When a single company like 1st Texas has so many models to sell some of them will share the same parts arranged differently and having different labels...it all in the marketing...IMHO, Woodstock

Much like Chevy , GMC mostly different tags ,most of the same parts.
The F 5 and Omega are very close cousins and the G2, GB share the or shared the same board..
The reason i stared this thread was to help , save some one a few bucks on a coil.

Yes gmanlight...that's fully understood. But it hard to convince some people no matter what your intentions were. Years ago my buddy's would say the only difference between a Chevy and a GMC was they used lock washers on the GMC and I used to cross reference parts for both. But like I said there are people who simply have to have genuine Tek coils even if the Fishers do the same job and they are willing to pay extra for the matching name on the coil....to me and the others who like to save the extra bucks your advice is great. Happy trails to All, Woodstock
