Combining hobbies....

Pete in MI

New member
Mike from MI and I (maybe others) have mentioned Geocaching before. Using a GPS can come in handy in our hobby to find or in some cases mark the location of found treasures or locations.

Researching of Geocaching sites sometimes leads to old ghost towns, logging camps, mines, etc.

I just got an eye opener as I went to Geocaching.com and got an aerial view of geocaches in my area: 143 of them!

Not all of these will lead me to productive detecting sites (a few are in cemetaries) and some where very few people ever go...but to find just one place worth checking out would make it worthwhile...like this place:

Foundations in an old town long gone. (Casey loves geocaching as long as there are no bugs or bears around... like that is a reality up here

Even if nothing in the line of detecting sites is found, there is always - beauty!

(Though even this place has potential...if I can just remember how to get back there...see a GPS could have marked the spot for me. Didn't have it with me at the time this picture was taken)

Or find something amusing like this Bowling Jesus...

I know He isn't bowling - "He's got the whole world in His hands (plural not hand)

God has a sense of humor.

So you can see combining hobbies can be useful in our detecting hobby as well. HH

bowling Jesus? I don't see it? I also never seen an aerial shot with marked goecaches? Where is that at?

Log in to www.geocaching.com
Next on the left go to Hide & Seek A Cache
Fill in the info for your area, either your address and distance you want to cover or zip code and distance then hit the GO
You'll find a page you are probably used to seeing with the text of where caches are in your area but look at the top right....Map It! Click it...next page will be a map - I had to zoom out some then wait...they start popping up all over the place.

Or log in then try this link:

I set it up to look within 50 miles of Vicksburg.

You can click on each of the icons and it will bring up info on what and where they are.

Never did that! Did you see how many are near Vicksburg!!!!!!!!!!!!! :)

Thank you for the very interesting post about Geocaching, Pete

I'm going to go to that web site and check it out
