Comments on Excalibur

I am thinking about getting wet and was thinking about getting the Excalibur II 1000, any comments? I also can pick up the original Excalibur for $1000. Why you ask, does he want the Excalibur? I already on the Explorer SE and familiar with Minelab.

I wonder why? There are lots of great beach detectors but the short list will give you the Excal and the CZ-21 for VLF water machines. PI beach machines are more of a mixed bag with each hunter having there own preference. I swing an Excal and I've had pretty good success with it in the last 2 years. If you're familiar with Minelab products it seems logical to go with the Excal unless you want to go the PI route.
There are lots of good underwater detectors on the market but I'd give my vote to the Excal, actually that's exactly what I did 2 years ago after a lot of research and positive feedback from other Surf Pirates.
The differrence between the Excal and the Excal 2 seems to be little more than a NiMH battery pack (FINALLY), a fancy paint job and a pinpointer.(the coil is a little lighter too) Just allow for a straight shaft in your budget because the same goofy shaft still comes as standard equipment.

Everyone has their preferences and mine is the PI but a PI is not for everyone.. I tried the Excalibur and for me it wasn't deep as my PI is and I sold it.. just wasn't my cup of tea so to speak It had other issues that I didn't like about it but I won't get into them

Whatever you purchase have fun with it and learn the machine inside and out

I use the Excal II and I am really enjoying it. It can be tricky to get used to but then I have only been detecting a little under a month(even so I have managed to find two pieces of gold and two pieces of silver with it in that time). It works and works well once you learn to speak its language. Being a detectorist already you will probably have little or no trouble jumping right in with it. I would definately get a straight shaft and make sure to leave yourself enough in th ebudget for a good stainless steel water scoop. I finally broke down and bought a scoop from Nuttall Enterprises. I was out there trying to use a shovel and let me tell you, you dont want to frustrate yourself like I did. I thought about buying the exal 1000 but then decided to go for the battery upgrade instead. Good luck!

it has worked great for me. I dug a nice wedding band that weighed 9.3oz at the jewlers with it

I have the recent Excal 1000 bought last year. I love it. I found 25 rings with it in a short period of time and about $250 in coins.

The Excal is nothing like the SE....if you had a sov. then I would say yeah its similar...but when I got the excal it was a diff. animal from the Explorer....don't think it is similar...its not.

Today I was at a birthday party for one of my daughter's friends (my daughter is 4) and in the back yard, not to far off is a pond. I went and looked and saw they had a changing area, tennis court, picnic tables, however none of this stuff has been used in a while. The one thing that really peak my interested was the platform kind in the middle with a ladder attached. At that moment I wish I had a detector, for the water. I would have been in the water.... But I went ahead and detected the land. I found some coins, think they are clads, haven't cleaned anything yet.

...mainly because the Excal's language is not at all the R2-D2 gibberish you hear on the Explorer. The Excal is much more straight forward in its language. It has its nuances and will require some time to really hear what it is saying. I am still in that process b/c I have had my Excal only three weeks. BUT...I had an explorer long before that and it was a beast to tame. I think the Excal will be easier on the front end, to learn.

I agree with bda, the original is fine. The new features are nice, but if you are buying a new unit and will still have warranty, then all is well. Minelab WILL take VERY good care of you. I have always been impressed, after the unit comes back for warranty work. Don't be alarmed though, I have broken EVERY submersible that I have ever used, LOL! Either would be a great choice!

If you are a fast swinger, you will have to reprogram your circuits (in your mind), as the Excal hates a fast sweep. Low and slow, will get cha the gold mate! When ya git it, send me a PM and I'll give you the recipe for success on setting it up for hearing the good stuff!

I was in the middle of the water today with 4 guys talking, all strangers. 3 out of the 4 had Excal. 1000. I am sure they all reserched before buying. The other guy had a Fisher unit, I love my excal 1000 and it gets better with time. HH
