At the risk of beating a dead horse, but I think this is very meaningful...
I was a little surprised to see you set it to manual....
A big part of the Manual/Auto sensitivity debate is hard to argue because on the earlier models we didn't know exactly where the sensitivity was being set in Auto. There are a couple of tests that one can run to get a rough idea, but it is pretty hard to know what is happening at any given point in time.
So when you switched to manual 24 and could run stable what was the Etrac trying to set the sensitivity to in Auto +3? Do you remember? I'm assuming if you were getting no depth it was a pretty small number.
My understanding is that the internal program for setting sensitivity is pretty much the same as the earlier Explorers. They are just displaying the Auto number real time and gave users the option to bump it up some from what the Etrac thinks is ideal.
Next time you are out swinging the Etrac, I would be curious to see what it sets the sensitivity to near power lines, and also away from power lines but where there is alot of trash in the ground. Rick(ND) did a little of this before freeze up. And maybe sometime way out in a plowed field away from power lines and trash. And maybe how much and how quickly it will vary the setting as you spend the day detecting.
