Confronted while detecting

Yes I did. I had asked the principal of the catholic school there and she helps with the church quite a bit. Before (if) I return to this location I’ll check back with her just to make sure it’s still alright.
Oh this changes everything! Tell them you have permission from the principal and hopefully that should solve the issue. If not and she continues to go on and on.... I’d ignore her lol

Your right I should’ve said something about it. I was just completed shocked since this was the first time someone had a problem with me, I wasn’t thinking straight. The main thing is I’ve learned a lot from it and will be ready next time something may happen

Learning while growing up means you are very smart & don't just take anything said or done for granted! God Bless you with His love & grant you His godly wisdom & you will go far to the righteous side of this life & unto eternal life through wisdom & knowledge by asking His forgiveness when doing wrong for His salvation grace! Very good start with Him--young man! Amen! Ma

I am going to be 29 one more time. Funny to have daughters that are 55 and 44. Glad I never age that much. Standing joke in my family. I still play cowboy's and Indians. I shoot a muzzle loader and throw knives and tomahawks. That way I will be young for ever. HaHa HeHe.

Happy & blessed, too, in the peace of our Savior. Our lord Jesus Christ! Glory Hallelujah God reigns Supreme & forever more! Amen! Ma

Thank you so much Ma!

one thing you need to remember church property is private property and you still need permission from the church first.
Exactly what I was going to say. Around here, digging church ground would get anybody booted in no time. If there is a cemetery nearby and there probably is, it's even more problematic. I understand that the church ground is what many people dream about detecting but in some places it just can't be done without issues. Even getting permission might still raise concerns from some local parishioners. Nate, there are plenty more places to hunt where people won't care and those who do will probably want to know what goodies you can find. I think you did a good thing to not get into her face which can be instinctive. Don't get discouraged by this. Carry on detecting the right way (with a code of ethics) and find new places. Chances are you will find spots that are more productive.

Nate, sounds like you're a great ambassador to the hobby. Kudos for keeping your cool and taking the high road with Ms. Busybody. I have to agree with everyone on the subject of getting prior permission, it is the one and only thing that will keep you from getting jammed up if someone seriously wants to push a complaint. I had a terrible experience a few years ago woth a woman who really raised hell with me. Once the property owner verified my permission to be there, it was over and done with. It was tough to stay polite with her but my experience is for every one like her, there's been hundreds of really nice people I've encountered and shared history of sites back and forth with.

This morning I was detecting down at a local church that had a catholic school on it that had been around for quite some time. I had detected this place COUNTLESS of times throughout the summer and managed to find a few wheat pennies and 2 war nickels without any people complaining. In fact I had many people that were interested and some even invited me to detect their properties. This morning was quite different. I had a lady confront me asking what I was doing and I simply said “metal detecting” she was like “yeah but your digging holes, ever time I look up your digging another one” so after about 45 seconds of talking and me just a teenager trying to stick up for myself that I always fill in my holes and are very neat she STILL wasn’t buying it and she continued to claim that kids would go and play and then trip on my hole. So I simply told her that I’ll leave and left it at that.

I wanted to post this on here because I’m sure I’m not the only person that’s been confronted while detecting. I honestly would’ve thought someone would’ve been proud to see a young teenager out and about digging “holes” instead of doing drugs and playing on video games.
What do y’all think?
Enjoy your hobby Nate, you will run across people that don't understand what your doing and as I was told by a park manager once the squirrels do more damage digging for food. I have a story and I'll keep it short, I was in the town I grew up in at a school play ground that I've hunted many times in the past. This day I was excited of maybe finding a piece of silver, the school dated from the 20's and had produced in the past. Out of the corner of my eye I seen a police car and as I look over at it the officer asked what I was doing. I explained looking for coins, he had me put my detector down and put me in the back seat of the patrol car. Than a supervisor pulled up and the supervisor came over to me to explain that someone in the neighborhood called and said I looked threatening. I didn't understand and felt afraid and nervous how a man in his 60's with a detector could be a threat. I had ask at the school office if I could detect on the property beforehand and they said yes. I never received a explanation from the officer on what I did wrong but was told get in my vehicle and don't come back. I started detecting in the early 70's and had a few people question what I was doing but this was the worst. I still enjoy this hobby and never look for a confrontation . Have fun detecting and know there are people that just want to steal your joy just because they don't understand what you are doing. Hope you make many good finds, you never know what the next signal will bring.

Nate you had a run-in with what is called a KAREN . Google karen to learn what she is all about.
Do not argue with her ,she has far more practice than you or I .
The only way to shut-up a karen is to be a better ken. (ken...a male karen.)

I can probably say that they had detectors & didn't want you Detecting in their territories & gave you a scare that would keep you from coming back! Yes, there are greedy, evil people like that! We had a place people gathered for swimming, diving & etc (STate Park) paid for by the Citizens taxes! Some had asked the rangers for permission to detect there & were absolutely refused--Another time when they went by the Rangers were detecting there themselves! Socialist DEMS? I would say so-Thinking I am a privileged Elite-You aren't oh little common man/woman! But when we have Jesus as our own personal Savior & Lord--We WIN with Him & endure & overcome ALL EVIL! Just believe in Faith that He reigns Supreme & does take care of His own! Ma

Ha
I have been confronted by people over the years too... this has taken place where I know it is fine to detect too.
One person called the cops on us at a park.
The officer drove up and I had an idea what had happened.
He told my buddy and I someone reported two guys digging holes in the park... I said that is us... now go find the holes (jokingly of course)
The officer laughed and said he needed to respond to the call and told us to have a nice day.
He also said he sees there all time and he would rather see us than some of the people that hang around there.
Another day a woman got after my buddy and then said something to me at a school.
I told him lets go to the other side of school away from her where we proceeded to find a great amount of quarters... I think we ended up finding about 100 quarters, went and got a pizza and laughed about the whole affair.
Don't let this deter you or get you down.
You handled yourself as best as you can... she just did not understand what you were doing.
If in question, I simply move on, but if I know I am in the right, I stand my ground.
My logic is that I am doing less harm than people not picking up after their dogs in parks and schoolyards!
Had this same thing happen to me and a friend in a public park... but the officer was not so nice. When she got within 10 yards of me, she told me to "Drop the shovel" and reached for her weapon! Not sure what someone told her, but no matter what I said, she wasn't having any of it. So we just did like the boys, stopped talking, packed up and walked away to avoid further confrontation.

Fortunately, most officers are nice, and understand where it's OK and where it's not. I guess some just have a bad day, just like we do, and take it out on the next person they encounter...

Good luck to all!

The Catholic Parish School & Church was open to all in my neighborhood, although mostly of Catholic religion--everyone, child & adult had access to the grounds for their needs--bicycle riding, exercising, playing games, playing on the playground equpment--Roads were open to go in & out walking or driving a car, riding bicycles --some collected aluminum cans & cleaned the ball Fields & etc. yes there was a cemetery behind the church with a fairly high fence with a road on each side! Believe it or not, No one bothered the dead & the dead never bothered anyone!!

I cleaned the first Ball field of dangerous broken glass & sharp items where I entered an open gate that I could get to without leaving a sidewalk by a Circle Drive that was two houses from where I lived! We moved there in May, 1974 & I sold & moved in Feb, 2014 after 40 years of living as a neighbor to some really good neighbors as my long time friends--some were also Luthern & other religions but never treated any different than our Catholic neighbors! I was divoced when I detected there the most (mid 1980s) & being single & older & not much Income, I treasure hunted close to home! Not everyone is as privigeded as others who can travel alone! I have an idea that Nate being in school & attending Church with his parents was the same with going back & forth detecting often in his Parish neighborhood; therefore, he was startled & surprised when confronted & questioned! I assume the vicinity was the same; espcially more, so if a member! Do we rob graves & dig treasure out of them? Definitely not & each of us has our own time to do things & or go detecting & to compare anyone's habits to anothers is ridiculous!

Nate, please do as God & your parents say that is right & try to get along even with the SAD SACKS & jealous ones & those who have no authority in trying to run your life but respect them as adults & human beings although they may not you! Pray for them & be happy in living right & doing good to others as much as possible! Go find the treasure where you have permission & enjoy your productive hobby! Amen! Ma

Some detect the areas themselves & some are hard-hearted Socialist-Marxist DEMS & let power go to their heads because of their hard hearts as they must rule over others; especially, whosoever loves & obeys God in Jesus' name & don't argue back to keep peace but instead we Pray for them to find Jesus' peace on earth that passes all human understanding! Amen! Lots of unhappy people now because of DEMON Possessed DEM Leaders voted ILLEGALLY into GOV & Congressional Offices! Ma

How exactly does permission work on beaches? I don’t beach hunt because I live far away from the ocean but I could see myself giving it a try on a vacation sometime.
Well we have a town beach here in my town but there are plenty of private ones I know locals so I get permission to park and detect them RI is open to all its beaches some in season you have to pay but in the winter and fall it’s all free..
