Continuing saga of the new SE PRO

Just got back from my 3rd 3 hour session with the new machine. First, let me say, it`s great ! 1901 barber( 7 inches), 3 wheats(one 1912), 2 clad quarters, 2 clad dimes, no date buff, 41 jeff, 5 various memorials and zincolns and last but not least, a 68 40% Kennedy. I hunted the same old house site I did yesterday. The pinpointing is going good up to about 7 inches, but on the deeper signals I`m having a bit of trouble locating the targets. I know I`m missing some stuff, and expected that would be the case. The only thing I have changed from factory is to switch on deep. Nine hours so far and 43 coins.4 silver, 1942 Washington, 1917 merc, 1901 barber dime, 1968 kennedy, 13 wheats, oldest 1910,10 clad dimes and quarters, 12 memorials(mainly cause don`t dig the real shallow ones) 2 buffs, and 2 jeffs. This thing is a nickle sniffer for sure, I used to miss a lot of them with the old analog. Hope some of you well experienced explorer guys will chime in with some comments and suggestions.

just a little tip on shallow targets i have found for what ever reasons barber dimes at 2inches and other shallow goodies in a local high school field that was once an old race track and fair ground but have also found the old coins 7 to 8 inches down go figure just a tip if it sounds good dig it

Okay, back at it for while today. One silver quarter, several wheats, all fairly shallow (3-4 in.). Had an experience with the threshold going silent unless I held the coil up off the ground a foot or two. Still having trouble pinpointing deeper targets, but I suppose time will help. The high pitch sounds are, of course what I`m trying to hone in on. Am using both digtal and smart screen after hearing the tones. The ground is fairly wet and am gettin some 8-10 ferrous readings on the wheats and mems, with a 25-28 conductivity. have been reading about the threshold cutting out here, but won`t try any adjustments until I have what I think is the proper amount of time on the factory settings. Won`t get to go again until this weekend so will keep reading and scanning Andy`s book for clues. I guess the deep signals are going to require a shovel to reach, am not used to digging these kinds of holes. LOL

good job bbqman i cant wait to take her to an old site right now just going where theres no freaking snow the mud is enough to deal with

Randy,
In your manual, page 21 read what it says about when a rejected target is being detected the threshold "blanks" (becomes silent).
This will explain why.
Hope this helps you.

somtimes back off on sensitivity helps thats why when you lift coil helps wet ground can make iron more sensitive there are other tricks you can use but don,t want to confuse you its all in andys book and with more time on the se it will start to make good sence to you im sure its all in that minelab learning curve part of the fun this detector rocks

Yes I was still finding coins, but did feel the depth was being compromised. Also the depth meter was a bit inaccurate too, showing coins deeper than they actually were. Do you suppose this was a result of the moist ground? I changed sites and the threshold was normal. Thanks Randy

Bits of iron, burned wood, coal, nails and other clustered trash I believe have an effect on threshold...It's important to also NOISE cancel when you start and about every 30 minutes or so or when you hear the detector starting to chatter or nearing a power line .. Noise cancel gets the best performance out of the detector and accuracy on target ID etc...Down-sizing the coil in heavy trashed areas will bring more goodies into your pouch,,,I use 4.5 x 7 inch coil in trashy sites and still popping coins at 8 inches or so..

PS Anytime you change the sensitivity on the detector NOISE cancel...

I hope this helps you some ....

Great advice , John, will do . Randy

Sounds like you are learning pretty fast. Nice finds

Have been out for the fith time today with the machine. Only about an hour this morning before a cold rain set in, but did find a 1919 s cent. Good shape. I`ve been reading a lot of posts today and the tip of watching the cursor in smart find during pinpoint sounds like something that will be extremely useful. So far 5 silver in 5 hunts, counting today`s brief outings. 30 wheaties, oldest 1910. It`s only going to get better. machine was makin quite a racket today when i would lay it down to dig a target, even after moving completely away from the hole, digger, probe etc. using noise cancel, just wondered if wet ground was causing or would another sensitivity setting help this? Still in factory preset semi auto 22.

Was you using the preset coin program?

Yes, the only thing I have changed is ironmask to 22 response to deep .

Okay an update on the progress so far with the machine. 9 hunts so far, maybe 25 hours on the machine.42 wheaties, earliest 1910, 3 buff nickles, 2 with dates, earliest `27. 1 1906 V nickle, 3 jeff nickles, including `42 non silver. 2 washingtons, 42, 49, 3 mercs, `17,`18,`45. 1 1901 barber dime, :), 1968 40% kennedy half, one very old bakery token, 1953 50th anniversary Ford Motor Company bronze medal, 1938 chevrolet sales award bronze medal. old stainless pocket watch,( I assume stainless). Scads of memorials and clad dimes and quarters. The only thing I have changed from factory is to use Bryce`s IM setting. I`m thrilled at the nickles finding capabilities of this machine. It`s new to me, being a guy that came off an old analog Garrett. It`s noisier than I`m used to, but am getting better used to it. The sounds are getting more ingrained, though I dig quite a bit of deep, sweet sounding iron. I have no complaint with the auto pinpointing and have been experimenting with the wiggle method with some success, just to see if I can master. Have found myself mainly using the smart find screen now for verification and sometimes switch over to digital too, but less and less. So far I love it, but it`s making my arm sore as hell. :) Anyone have any input on that? HH

Randy

Out again today for a couple hours. 8 wheats, earliest an almost unreadable 1911, and a 1948 Washington ! I`m getting much more confident with the sounds and readings. The machine sounds much better on the deep coins with higher gain settings I`m using now. Also begiining to understand that a coin among trash will still register on smart find and digital. The pinpointing on smart find and the bouncing cursor nearly always proves to be a coin. The digital numbers vary in ferrous the deeper the coin is, at least in this central Texas ground. I`m starting to get really excited about the Se Pro ! 9 silvers in 11 hunts.
