.....Copper Spearheads??

BK

New member
Are these common finds for u guys? These finds were 9 to 6 inches deep on river banks. The spearhead type points were found 3 miles apart on a river bank in Wisconsin. The awl type point was found in upper Wis 300 miles north.
I went to the local library and they had nothing to help me with identification. I tried the internet and after a bit of searching i finally found the Copper Culture web site.
I was trying to find answers to questions like, How can i be sure if these artifacts are from native Americans or the white man, What specific style characteristics do i look for when determining the age of different implements. Were native Americans using copper implements 200 years ago? If not, then why did they stop using copper? Im hoping to date these finds.
Thanks, BK

I do know that some were found in my neck of the woods in the Chicago area and they feched about 2500.00 a peice. That is some awesome finds there and congrats to you. Keep your spot under wraps and you may have a small fortune comming your way sooner than you think! Scott

BK,

They look like copper culture to me. Saw a couple good Websites that have many pictures of examples. There are a few folks that go to the metal detecting club meetings in Madison that are quite knowledgeble. Perhaps someone in the Portage group too.

Chris

Heres a site you can look over..... http://copperculture.homestead.com/

I won't post mine anymore but you have some nice tools there..HH...Geo

These are from the old copper culture which flourished from about 2000 to 9000 BC , yes before the time of Christ there were people in the upper midwest working copper . You have some excellent examples. They are not as valuable as previously stated but can bring 100 per inch depending on rarity and condition. They are by no means common , but many are found in Wisconsin, Michigan, Ontario, Minnesota. some as far away as the east coast, west to the Dakotas and south to mississippi (isolated burial items etc.)

A friend of mine found a copper spear-point a year or so ago and he took his to the college and had them do a test on it to see how old it was. It turned out to be between 3,500 to 6,000 yrs old. He ended up selling it for $750 but I think if he would have waited awhile, he could have gotten more for it. The college even documented the spear-point and even showed him a picture of one that was similar. Congrats on those Excellent Finds and hope you are able to get them dated.

I recall reading an article in Western&Eastern Treasure mag about a lady finding one of those. Depending what era it came from it can have a nice value.

200 years ago I'm sure the natives had steel knives and guns.you may looking back a thousand or more years.Try not to damage them.If you have a museum near you, talk to the curator, they may know a lot about them. Good luck, nice finds.
