Couple of pinpoint switch targets

These three targets would have eluded me today if I had been in discriminate mode. Running in all metal all three came in clearly; toggle to discriminate mode and not a peep. Tried adjusting sensitivity and volume, all with discrimination on minimum, and none of these three targets made a tone sound or changed the barely audible threshold in discrimination mode until inches of sand had been removed to get the coil closer to the target.

The shotgun shells have a small amount of steel in them on the underside which causes a partial null.. when I find them while hunting in disc they come in as a mixed scratchy signal..

Good work TVR, Hope we can get out in the next few months and dig some treasure.....

John making 6 right now, yours should be in the mail next Monday.....I think these will be the last for the year, I want to do more time...:detecting:

I've had some targets before that were there in pinpoint and not in disc; maybe one target like that over several hunts. What was odd about this hunt was three targets in the first half hour that were all not heard in disc. Got lots of parts of cans that have now hit the scrap metal pile, but over a 4 hour outing, only got 6 targets to keep.

bootyhoundpa,
I took the a hand full of shell backs that I've found and put them on the ground and checked them. In disc I'm not hearing a null; if I put a quarter inch piece cut off a paper clip under the coil, I get a null. The shell backs get a little scratchy or iffy when the coil is raised enough to be at the edge of detection, but then a quarter does too. Might be my hearing is not as good as yours; or maybe I need to change the headphones!!!

OBN,
Will have to see how family events pan out. Father-in-law was having a great day on Sunday so wife and I felt he would be OK, had the neighbor available just in case, and took an impromptu road trip; then came home and took him out to dinner since he still had some energy. Would be nice to get some tips and critique on what I could be doing better!
Cheers,

Well get ready buddy, I will have the boat in the water by May.....

How much extra depth do you figure on pinpoint than on regular discriminate? When I had my excal I usually hunted on a 1

Kind of hard to say things about depth in wet sand and shallow water. On the two that were in the sand and not water, I did move sand away and check in discriminate mode until I could hear something; I'd would guess that I moved sand away to get the coil about an inch closer to the target before I was hearing something in disc.

One other observation is that thin pieces of can slaw that are perforated from corrosion can sound pretty good in discriminate mode but not do much for me in pinpoint. That would lead me to think I may have a better chance on thin gold chains in discriminate mode. I will need to do some testing with some real chains along those lines; unfortunately all of the chains my wife likes to wear are thin enough that I don't see them at all with the water detectors, in any mode. Could use some slightly heavier chains to test.
Cheers,
