Found a ring this evening at a Civil War encampment area. It was 8" deep. When I pulled it from the ground, at first I thought it was a badly rusted grape shot but when I hit it with the edge of my digging tool, it split in half, exposing this ring. The ring is encrusted in a rock-like substance. It is not clay, it is more like a rough granite with sparkles in it.

Here is a shot of the encased ring. Whatever the stuff is, it'll have to be chiseled off.

Working on it for about an hour exposed an anchor. I had to scrape the top of the ring with a steel pick, as the crustacean on it could not be touched with a wooden toothpick.

Here's the best that I could get it. I don't think the ring is gold or silver, and I don't think it's that expensive of a ring. But I do think it is Civil War period.

Also found at this site a pulled bullet, fired musketball, percussion caps, backs of 3 Civil War buttons (give me a break) and the ring. Since the ring doesn't seem that expensive, I will probably chisel the rock off of it. Thanks for looking,
