:csflag: Encased ring....

Found a ring this evening at a Civil War encampment area. It was 8" deep. When I pulled it from the ground, at first I thought it was a badly rusted grape shot but when I hit it with the edge of my digging tool, it split in half, exposing this ring. The ring is encrusted in a rock-like substance. It is not clay, it is more like a rough granite with sparkles in it.

Here is a shot of the encased ring. Whatever the stuff is, it'll have to be chiseled off.

Working on it for about an hour exposed an anchor. I had to scrape the top of the ring with a steel pick, as the crustacean on it could not be touched with a wooden toothpick.

Here's the best that I could get it. I don't think the ring is gold or silver, and I don't think it's that expensive of a ring. But I do think it is Civil War period.

Also found at this site a pulled bullet, fired musketball, percussion caps, backs of 3 Civil War buttons (give me a break) and the ring. Since the ring doesn't seem that expensive, I will probably chisel the rock off of it. Thanks for looking,
Vernon

I HOPE YOU WILL POST A PIC OF THE RING AFTER YOU HAVE IT COMPLETELY REMOVED FROM ITS ENCASEMENT.

NICE BULLET AND BUTTON FINDS, TOO! :yo:

It should break apart from the ring at the very least so you don't ruin it trying to get it out. I've had my share of encrusted finds and have found it to be the first step in the right direction. Is it brass? hard to tell in pic. Great find and who knows it might have an inscription you wouldn't want damaged

If the crust is a lime base, soak the ring in warm vinegar over night to soften it up or even disolve it.
