CTX-3030 Dead Display

Event log (for readers review/use will update as progresses)

2016.03.19
I Headed out before sunrise for a full day hunt, arrived, selected a beginning point and powered up the CTX-3030...
start up tones sounded off raising my spirits and then I looked down in disbelief... DEAD DISPLAY. Swung the detector across my foot and heard the correct response ( I keep a silver dime in one shoe for a mid hunt reference. ) Knew I'd just joined the group of other CTX users suffering this dissapointment but still hoping against hope did all the obligatory checks... Swapped batteries, power on reset, checked all connections... Wind effectively robbed from my sails, I packed up and headed back for the barn. I carry a Gofind60 all the time but couldn't bring myself to swing it with the CTX out of commission. Bummer weekend with awesome detecting weather.

2016.03.21
Just got off the phone with Jamie at Minelab. No frills conversation... "Here's your RMA - ship it to Minelab East - can I help you with anything else - have a good day." Yes I wanted to pour out my dissapointment but it's not her fault and thankfully it's still under warranty (8 months left). I've packed it securely and Fedex is hauling it on down to the Minelab East service center (Kellyco for those not aware). I've included authorization for the seal upgrade while it's there - honestly uncomfortable not having it done given the machines replacement cost.
Anybody got a violin? Play me a sad tune... I'll let you know how it goes...

Things happen... I had a dead speaker right out of the box when I got my CTX just after it was released. Knock on wood, no problems since.... Considering the amount of use and the conditions I have been through, even if something did go wrong now I wouldn't be too upset...

The next part of this post (following this message) will be in Novel format... My own personal sad story so move long unless you really need to be entertained with this soap opera.

Cliff Notes version :
  • The dreaded dead display
  • sent for warranty repair
  • repaired fast and returned from Minelab servce center (Kellyco)
  • letter to service center asking 6 simple questions ignored
  • disappointed with service center communications
  • unboxed returned unit to find "slight scratch" on display screen
  • disappointed with scratch but elated to get machine back in time for vacation - ready to tryout new 17" coil on vacation beach hunt
  • arrived at beach in late evening - first hunt at night with head flashlight
  • first minelab discovery - "slight scratch" was actually cracked display - revealed by flashlight not apparent in daylight
  • bummed no hunting on vacation
  • depressed ( and honestly angry) put machine in its cabinet - went back to work
  • many days later...finally calm enough to write intelligent polite letter to Minelab
  • waiting on Minelab response....

For those of you who do not know me I have difficulty condensing a story...as my dad put it..."my son builds you a house to describe a doorknob.
so save yourself and stop here or proceed if you must...you've been warned...

That sucks, but I did get a good laugh out of what you said that your dad said.

Now on with the Novel...cliff notes that... is cause its late and I'm all but asleep...

Jamie at Minelab got my letter and responded promptly the very next business day.
Deftly acknowledged my woes without acknowledging any fault or failure on Minelab's part
all while simultaneously extending the correct amount of sincere empathy.
Just send it back and we will fix it on us...Better still We'll cover the shipping both ways.
along with a polite recommendation that I keep my repair notes to the technician short and to the point (dear old Dad would be so proud of Jamie)
So its boxed and shipped...and apparently being worked on right now
even got a friendly call today from Marty at the repair center
High hopes tonight of soon being reunited with my freshly repaired detector.

Now I must humbly admit a sense of chagrin knowing how upset I let the first experience get me.
Glad I've lived long enough to begin to understand "Son...when your mad, hold your tongue, cause honey attracts more than vinegar"

That's all for tonight - Sweet dreams my detecting friends and happy hunting come tomorrow!

Quick update -
Machine has been repaired and returned.
This most recent experience certainly restores my trust in Minelab's commitment to their loyal customers. Customer Service as it should be.

I've owned the Explorer II, Excaliber II, CTX3030 and even the GOFIND60 and yes the next detector purchase will be a Minelab as well.
