Curious - how much would be the most you would pay to do a.............

...natural hunt for a full 10 hour+ day on pristine, undetected private plowed fields and large multi-million dollar private estates or historically significant public areas (that are totally off-limits to ANY detecting) on significant Revolutionary era locations (items already found dating to early 1700's) with FULL PERMISSION and fully sanctioned under a local Historical Society on eastern Long Island, NY? $60, $75, $100????

All payments would be tax deductible contributions to the non profit Society (that gets you tax savings of around 35 cents per dollar). Prizes, raffles and refreshments included - only small groups (10-15) of serious hard core hunters allowed on each hunt. Multiple weekend days will be available this spring and fall.

This exact program is being finalized right now. Our goal is to create the most prestigious and exciting land detecting club in the country culminating in the most exclusive annual hunting event, each fall, that there ever was here in the US...

What could possibly be more exciting than finding items such as 1700's era Spanish reales or (ca. 1750's) Georgivs III large copper halfpennies or Revolutionary War soldier buttons in all their historic glory???

Most of you have spent upwards of $1500 for your detectors plus accessories - why not utilize your equipment in the search for real treasure?

Email me to receive more info and latest updates to this exciting program. barryny@optonline.net

Why only "serious and hardcore detectorists"?

What I really meant to say is that these initial hunts aren't really social club type of events. This is similar to those detecting trips that you would go over to England and do.
We actually expect that everyone will be looking to get in as much detecting time as possible to have the opportunity to recover the most targets.
8-9AM start until dusk. You can detect as much or as little as you want.

So I believe that ANYONE interested in finding Revolutionary era items would be interested in participating in this "club" - the events are open to anyone on a first come basis.
It's a fund raising activity for the Historical Society (that oversees this Town) and they have really embraced it. Hopefully it will be a blueprint for other Historical Societies around the country to follow - and not frown upon our awesome hobby of metal detecting as some Societies do...
I've already received a large number of emails expressing interest in the project.
Thanks for your interest and hopefully I have clarified my wording. More to follow...

Im in, $75 a day sounds reasonable.

Good question DirtFlipper and already discussed with the Managing Director.

They would love to create a display showcase in their existing Museum, for the finds, and they are really not interested in coins just artifacts...

We decided that you will have one of three options:

1 - keep your finds - there is no one that will be policing you on what you discover
2 - fully donate any items directly and get credit for the find in the Museum showcase. a detailed description of the item will be provided and you are free to get an independent value determined and you may have a nice tax write-off (like donating clothes)
3 - you could "lend" them the item for a defined period of time for them to display it, get credit for the find in the Museum display and then have it returned

Thanks for your interest.

Barry,

I would be very interested in participating and I think a rate of $75 - $100/day would be a fair rate provided their exist some prime detecting sites on the property.

Best regards,

Keith

Probably would need some type of bid system.....who would get the best spot otherwise? Too many detectors in small area would be a major issue.

$100 per day seems to be the magic number. However a lot of factors would play into this, such as potential of the site, accomodations, number of participants per acre, time of year, etc.

This is a work in progress which benefits the entire detecting community and I appreciate ALL feedback as we mold the program.

Our ultimate goal is to provide YOU with the opportunity to detect on never before detected properties with the potential to find Colonial era items. We believe that we will be able to deliver on that promise.

To address some of the questions recently raised:

The plowed field hunts won't need a bid system for the best spot - we are keeping the hunter numbers low (10-15) per hunt day with priority going to someone who is making a trip and detecting for both weekend days. These plowed fields range in size from 20-50 acres. There will be at least 2 sites available for each day's hunt. Private estate properties and public areas (when we do get them approved) will be much more limited, maybe 3-4 people - very exclusive with much potential.

Within the overall 10 sq. mile area that these 100+ sites are situated in, all of the villages were generally settled in the 1650's era. I have personally been on 3 sites this past fall and each site has delivered a pre 1800 coin plus buttons, buckles, etc. I'm confident that every site chosen will offer that same potential. This is an active resort area in the summer so there are many places available for accommodations especially when we will be doing these hunts - which will be in the middle-late spring before planting and in the late fall after harvest and plowing. One or two weekends this spring and three or four weekends this fall. It all depends on the demand we receive for that particular day. Bring the wives/husbands/significant others - this is a very upscale area and there is great shopping and dining and site seeing.

I personally am addicted to this hobby, so I wouldn't mind being out there with only 3 people on one of the virgin 20 acre plowed sites. If you get excited about finding a 1941 Merc - I want to see the look an your face when you find a 1796 eight reales - sitting right on top of the dirt - talk about virgin sites. That eight reales is bigger than a silver dollar - no one could have missed that one - that is.....if anyone was ever detecting there before....

Sounds great, I would be in agreement for the $75-$100/day. Thanks for the opportunities. How will it be advertised in the future? Here on this site or personal emails?

I would like to start collecting emails from interested parties.
I have already received quite a few.

This site frowns upon "commercial ventures" - even though these outings are being fully directed under a not-for-profit 503(c) organization.
All monies paid for any of the outings are considered contributions and will be fully tax deductible under IRS guidelines - no one is making any money on this venture.
All proceeds are used by the Historic Society for their property restoration, educational and community programs.

We may be running banner ads here when we finalize all the details.

Thanks for your interest.

The response has been overwhelmingly positive from hobbyists all over the country - as I had hoped it would be.
I have received over 50 requests for more information and to count people "in".
This is really very exciting. Our hobby could use a great positive publicity boost like this - the Historical Society is keen on getting as much media publicity as they can for our program.
I will post more information as I finalize the details with the Society's board of trustees.

Thanks again for the continued interest.

Hi Barry,
I just want to ask you a fews questions. How do you know that the areas you mention are pristine and undetected. As far as I know there is 2 clubs on Long-Island.Each club has a minimum of 50 members. Many of them with more than 25 years experience and being a member of one of them for quite a fews years their finds have been very scarce. For myself I have only one quarter of real and my buddy only 2 reals after 25 years of detections.Yes we have quite a few English coopers but nothing to bragg about as they quite worn out.Furthermore the east end of long island is far from the main point of the revolutionary war. There was only 16 families living there on the 1650 and many of us in Long Island will think that this is looking for a needle in a haystack. For God sake we are not in Virginia.Your remark about a similarity of detection on trips to England is very ironical.Every inch of the European ground is an historical site for thousands of years. How can you compare.Over the years each one of us have made ours own contacts and know what to expect. The main question is how many artifacts or coins came out of the sites that you mention?I hope that everybody feel that we have a great hobby but I will hate to see been turned into a business venture.

Hello Old Coins.
I appreciate your commentary and concerns.

First off this is NOT a business venture - it is being run by a not for profit charitable organization and it's an amazing opportunity for all detecting enthusiasts to make incredible finds right here in the US - finds they are not going to come upon in their local park or school yard.

All I can attest to is that I have personally hunted on just 3 plowed farm sites for about 5 times total this fall (we have over 100 plowed sites identified in the general area for this project) and EVERY one of them has delivered silver earlier than 1830 and/or many old coppers, buttons and relics from pre-1750 on up. My detecting buddy has been hunting just one of these fields for over 10 years with full permission. He knows that no one is hunting the area for 2 reasons - never has he ever seen anyone else detecting and he always comes away with incredible finds from reales to fugio cents to artifacts and soldier buttons of all sorts. As a courtesy to him we will NOT be hunting on "his field"...which has delivered for him each and every time out over these past 10 years (that's why I personally love plowed fields - always something new and exciting coming up from the depths)...his field is typical of all the other fields that surround it - he will be pulling stuff from his field for many more years to come.

Now, as an example of what one would expect to find on one of our private sites, my last time out I recovered a full 1796 eight reales sitting right on top of the dirt plus 3 large coppers pre 1800's and a couple of musket balls and artifacts in the 5 hours I was there - these sites are NOT detected - how do I know that - because they have delivered each time out and are posted No Trespassing (you wouldn't enter posted land without permission, right?) and actively watched. They are not out in the country and miles from the nearest town and hidden from view - they are typically 20-30 acre parcels right out in the open and situated in-between multi-million dollar homes, themselves, sitting on 3-5 acre sites and policed by a VERY active town police force. There is NO farmer to walk up to and ask permission. There are no farm houses sitting on these sites. These sites are professionally managed by agriculture companies and owned by multi-millionaire land barons. The properties alone that each site comprises are worth in the $10+ million range. Permission is impossible to come by - why would they let you on their property and have any liability? Also, the multi-millionaire home owners that surround these plowed fields (they bought their parcel from the big land baron in the first place) - they surely don't want any random detector guys walking around near their homes - rest assured they're calling 911 immediately...that's why the Historical Society became the key to this project - they know all the land owners and have gotten the necessary permissions for these organized hunts and all for the benefit to the Society. So while there are never any guarantees of great finds - the potential does exist to make them. The east end of Long Island, although not necessarily a battle area of the Revolution, housed thousands of British soldiers who were stationed here and initially arrived on our US soil here - the Society knows the specific locations where they were quartered and we will have the opportunity to hunt those private and controlled home sites, too (along with some significant public areas)...if however these sites turn out to be worthless, then word will quickly get out - so the first guys going out - I will have the Society guarantee their complete satisfaction - money back...nothing to lose here. The program's success will depend upon everyone's satisfaction and ability to make good finds that hopefully will be posted for everyone to see. I will personally detect each site to see what's there - before we offer it for the hunts - to make sure it has potential. I've invited CT Todd to come and video us out there - early this spring - to show first hand what these sites can deliver...

All this being said, I welcome meeting up with you anytime and anywhere to have you take a look at the finds I have made in just the 5 times I've been out. I am sorry but what can I say about you guys having found just the two coins: the 2 reales and the quarter reales after 25 years of detecting your site(s) here on Long Island? Why is that relevant to anyone else? Could the issue be equipment, dedication, luck, skill or maybe YOUR site location is over hunted? Who knows. How is it that some of the local guys go to Jones Beach or Robert Moses Beach and frequently and consistently pull gold when other guys find nothing? I found over 5 pieces of gold plus about 2 dozen silver jewelry items and over $500 in clad - this summer from June 15th to September - and this was my first year detecting...some guys hunting these beaches (for years) kept complaining to me about their lack of finds...who knows what the reasons are and why I found what I did - let me assure you - it surely isn't that I'm such an amazing detectorist...

On a side note regarding the England trips - have you ever gone there yourself? I am going over March 12th for a week. It's interesting to note that even over there, the organizer has just posted on our private forum about a member's finds from the fall...the organizer was too embarrassed to show them. Everyone else had found dozens of coins including coppers, hammies, and even Celtic gold in the week they were there - but this hunter had found just one copper and everything else was junk farm equipment iron - it just goes to show - even in the best of locations some do get skunked when others find treasure....

Feel free to contact me at barryny@optonline to discuss further. Thanks.
