Appearances are deceptive. What looks like a gap, is insulating tape to prevent contact between the two shields. The actual gap is no more than 1/4in. It could be even less, say 1/16in, but there is always a danger of the two ends touching as the coil position is adjusted for zero balance. There are no performance advantages to ultra small gaps. The two shields are not electrically joined until the control box.
More DD's are on the way to Bill Crabtree, so hopefully, demand can be met.
