depth and id readings

when you guys get deep coins lets say over 7 inches or so does your ferrous readings go up a lot? for example if you had a quarter at 8 inches even what does the range of your ferrous readings go to. most quarters i find here read at 00-28 to 00-29 to around a few inches. i had a silver quarter buried some time ago behind my garage at 8 inches. i checked saturday with my 10x12 sef coil where i think it was and i got a reading of 23-28 solid and it had a nice high tone. there is no garbage in the ground around where i buried the quarter. when you folks hit deepies and they turn out to be silver do you remember if you ferrous stayed low or did it rise with the depth? and i am considering different areas and some places may be trashy and some clean. thanks for any help and as always happy hunting.

so would you suggest that anything that reads high on the conductivity scale and has a nice high flutey tone dig it? i have passed on a lot of targets that read good conductivity deep and had the tones but didnt dig because the ferrous readings would be high like maybe 14 to 25. i get a lot of targets that read anywhere from 14-27, 20-28 or 22-27 and so forth and maybe i have missed a lot of silver or other good targets. i guess that i need to just dig almost everything that reads high conductivity with a nice tone and hits good and see what gives. thanks so much for all the info.

If you are in conductive you will get HIGH tones off iron. My suggestion is to only use your digital screen to check the numbers if you must. Watch your smart screen if its peggin to the left with a repeatable high sound on a deep target check it with pinpoint if it stays in the iron range dont waste your time. Pinpoint can be helpful simply because you can center the target and get the best TID. If you get good sound and it bounces or moves more to the right dig-it if its deep. If its half way down the depth gage and it says it iron... IT IRON. The explorer deffently knows what it is at that depth. The ferr numbers are just no where close to being reliable. In your test garden... play with your gain and sensitivity and if you have FAST on.. .. turn it off. You get a better TID with it off. You have to center the target and keep your coil on the ground.... if its raised or you arent centered you could get all kind of reading digitally on that coin. Check your smart find and see what its doing.

i have an explorer2 and generally keep my iron mask at around -10.. if i am at a very old place i may bring the iron mask down to -6 when i hunt for the deep silver.
