Depth vs. sound

Would be interested in hearing at what depth each typical old coin would loose its typical numbers and become "iffy". Seems like all my Barber dimes always come in as "iffy". Please comment. Thanks, Mike

well lets take indians, since I have dug a fair amount of them with the etrac. In my soil they start to become iffy around the 7-8" mark. A lot of them are dug in the 5-6" range and they are pretty solid 09-36 area, but once they get 7" or more, they really bounce around a lot and I think this is why a lot of people pass em up, thinking it is a junk target

Just curious, are you hunting in auto or manual?? My soil here in middle Tn is moderate to good. I have hit indians at 8 to 10 inches. My signals on those hits have been Conductive numbers 33-37 generally 34 with ferrous numbers bouncing between 10 and 22. Deep nickels the ferrous numbers seem to bounce the other direction for me bouncing from say 02 to 13. I try and run manual at least to 24. When its real trashy I have done better at some sites in auto plus 3. I have a few trashy sites I have hunted previously I may revist and hunt in auto plus 0 or even auto -3. As far as deep dimes(7-10) inch the conductive numbers usually stay in the 43 to 46 area with ferrous bouncing 10-24. I do run with fast on a lot and this can sometimes cause the numbers to get a little distorted. Manual is usually deeper than auto plus 3 and will give better numbers on deep coins.

I run both auto +3 and manual, most areas I hunt around here I can get to 26 or 27 in auto +3, and that is more than enough power. Average coins are 5-7 inches. If I am hunting a site than is pretty clean and I have already hunted it hard in auto, I will try manual to try to reach those targets than are a tad deeper

For me "iffy" happens around 9-10". I get that one direction clipping signal that indicates a depth around 9-10" or more and use the stomp method to help bring it to life, if good, or kill it if bad.

stomping on the ground will sometimes disturb the iron halo enough that it will stop the iron from giving you a signal, you stomp real hard and if the signal is still there, it is worth investigating further
