I plotted out a random 10' square, and with the 6" Excellerator EQ2 coil on the SE Pro, I dug EVERY detectable target. All the "iffys", all the Iron, everything. I started at 8:30AM, and finished at 7:00PM! (30 minute lunch break) I knew the place I have been hunting was iron infested, but dang! I pulled out 158 pieces of iron junk, and 15 pieces of non ferrous junk, along with a .22cal bullet, and a percussion cap. I think the cap might be from a re-enactment, and as to the big "thing" I have no clue, if anyone has a clue let me know. The object is 3" tall, 2 5/8 dia, the raised square ot the top is 1" across flats. As to the background on the site, it is 40 acres with a 161 year old 2 story house, I have been hunting it 2 years now, and am yet to get my first coin, CW relic, etc. My next plan is to put the pro coil on and see if anything else turns up any deeper.
I was amazed at how small an object the 6" coil would sound off on, pretty impressive. On another note, I bought the girlfriend a Garrett Pro Pointer - and stole it for the day, I have an X1 on the SE Pro, but this thing was really a joy to use, it was very easy to tell where the object was, and the depth was excellent, just slightly less than the X1, without having to be teathered to anything.

Wow Joe , you did some serious digging there.Some great photo's you took also . With that kind of dedication I expect you will be posting some really nice finds soon .:thumbup:

I am sure you have looked on google maps and looked down on the site you have been hunting to check for old roads, foundations or other interesting places to investigate.. Also look for any white or dark spots on the map, It could lead you to other sites on the property.
 
And the place is still occupied, and I have the homeowners complete support. I was out digging one day with my little digger, and he comes up with a shovel and said "If you are going to dig... DIG". I have been all over it on google maps, plotted my own maps along with GPS coordinates of anything decent I have found, and have done research on the CW activity in the area. The house supposedly housed wounded troops, but I have found no evidence to anything other than a large iron meteor exploded overhead and saturated the ground :surrender:
 
I believe the " Big Thing" is a protective cap that screwed on an oxygen or acetylene bottle for a cutting torch...... There are probably marks on one of the big limbs of that tree where they had a chain hoist to pull the motors too ...... You can also tell by the lack of coins, that the guy was too broke to pay anyone else to work on his vehicles ...... I've been there.....

I think the big thing is a sewer clean out plug, like the ones that go in behind a sink. A lot of digging, good job.
 
There are nails on the 2 closest branches that might have held a tree house at one time, and since they are both dead and well rotted away, a chain causing damage many years ago might have been the cause. I cant get over the lack of coins ANYWHERE on the site. I have been hunting it for almost 2 years now, and coin wise all I have found is 2 aluminum "Shells Mr. President Coin Game" tokens. and a large brass advertising token. Not the first IH, wheat, silver, or anything. The place was built in 1849 and still is lived in, what gives??? It's enough to discourage a fella.

I am going to hit that same 10' X 10' square with the pro coil this time and see if I can hit on something deeper. I ordered a SEF 18 X 15 from Kellyco a couple of weeks ago, but they are on back order with no idea when they are coming in. I guess they are on a slow boat from Ireland, Australia, or Tiland, I'm not sure which. I would LOVE to run that over this clean spot just to see...

Cool post and diggs. I too like the 6". Hard to beat for the money. I had the Sunray on a diffrent machine i sold. Once i bought the ET i wanted a probe that i could use with any machine. The ProPointer fits the bill nicley. It recovers super fast and is easy to use.

Question for you on your spot. How far down can you dig before hitting clay or hardpan?
 
Sorry.... I didn't mean I've been to that site :nono:.... I meant I lived for years too broke to hire someone to work on my vehicles .:look:..... Been trying to block some of those shade tree mechanic memories .:rage:
 
Roughly 4" then it goes to a thick mud right now that will become more of a clay as everything dries back out. I also have evidence that there has been some fill dirt added in spots away from the house, due to a color change around 4" down, then 4" or so below that I hit the mud/clay.

I knew exactly what you meant :bouncy: If you can tell where a site is by looking at an old tree, AND recognize you have hunted it, I might as well take up knitting, 'cause I am WAY out of my league!!! :wave: Thease folks may have been shade buggy mechanics from looking at this old "junk".
 
Well, I went back and didn't really find much worth mentioning with the "pro" coil, other than another percussion cap and 8 more pieces of iron junk just like all the rest of iron junk I found. I was wondering, how many points do I get for finding Mason jar lids without the jar full of money under them?? :thumbdown: They appear to be pretty darn old, with a white glass seal of some sort in the top cap. Other than a few of them here and there, and a couple of .22 bullets in the field, I really found nothing to write home about. Still not the first coin. I did find a foot long "whatsit" I will put in the electrolysis tank tomorrow, and post in the what is it forum.

Sometimes there just isn't anything there :rant: The reason i asked about the depth was to see if anything was sinking to deep. Out of reach of the machine/coil. Doesn't seem to be the case. Since you cleaned most of the junk and iron out. Masking is out the window too.
