do higher co's mean larger coins?

No. I've pulled up clad dimes at 12-44 and others have pulled up silver dollars at 1-40

If the CO dictated the size rather than the composition of the coin then the dime would have to be larger than the dollar which it clearly is not.

It's about the composition of the metal and how it conducts electricity, not the size.

A silver dollar could be a 1-40 or thereabout = Low iron (ferrous) content and highly conductive.

A nail could be 35-40 or thereabout - High iron (ferrous) content and highly conductive.

Hope that makes sense.

Please scratch what I just said. I don't want to miss-lead you. I got Andy Sabisch's book in the mail today "The Minelab Explorer and E-Trac Handbook" and have already started reading it.

On pages 12 and 13 he explains how minelab developed a way to read two signals from a target unlike the single signal of earlier detectors. They called these FE and CO whereas older detectors were only reporting CO. However, he goes on to say that they could have just as easily called them X and Y.

They have used these two signals to make a two dimensional grid. They determined that when the two signals returned from a given target they would each hit at various locations on the grid. A silver dollar for example would plot around 1-40 and a nail around 35 something. It's not that the E-Trac knows that it is an iron nail, it is just plotting the returning signal on the grid. Nails and other ferrous items plot low and non-ferrous plot higher. But just because the E-Trac plots a 1-40 does not mean it is a Silver dollar. It just means you hit a target that plots 1-40 on the grid. And by the way, Silver dollars also plot 1-40 on the grid so maybe you should dig it.

He even goes on to say the following about the Explorer and E-Trac: "There is no true metallurgical analysis being performed on each target that the detector sees despite what the terminology infers"

In short,Minlab engineers tested many targets in the air and buried in the ground and documented the returning signals on the grid. Silver coins, etc. hit higher on the grid and iron targets plot lower on the grid.

After I read more, if I can find a better way to explain it I will. Hope this wasn't too confusing.
