Do the best finds come first?:detecting:

I was wondering if others on this forum have had the same experience as I have, of making your best find of the day early in your hunt? I have not made any great fines, but my success has improved as I learn how to run my new T2 LE. Recently I found a small ring 5 mins into my hunt, I had only gotten 20 feet from the car. Or, you find 2 Quarters in your first hole, and after that all you find are pennies. Maybe I`m getting tired and sloppy as time goes on.

I do know after a few hours, it is harder to concentrate. Though sometimes a "second wind" and some mental games help a person get serious going back to the car, and Bang!
I wonder exactly how long a person gan go without getting sloppy, I guess it depends on a lot of things, but for sure, even in "hunted out spots" somebody missed what you will find, and vice versa.
Those high trash areas really wear a guy down quickly, so I like to hop from trash to clear spots just to refocus.. hitting a chip totlot is a quick and easy way to rack up some change/jewelry and get reinvigorated. I'm good for about 2hours/100 targets before I need a nap!

In thinking about this ever since the question was posed, from my experiences I have made my better finds early on, through out and in the end on hunts. In essence, they can come at any time. Having said this, in recent years, though, I try and limit my hunting time to about no more then four hours. I have found hunts for me longer then four hours causes me to loose concentration, as mudpuppy alluded to, and I become sloppy with my swing, strive to cover more ground if I haven't already made any good finds and simply don't hunt as methodical as I was earlier in the hunt. This has been my experience, anyway. HH jim tn

Its weird that you bring this up.Some of my best finds are sometimes my first target.I had this feeling to check a fence line at this old school and the first target I dug was a old medal givin to the school kids for the queen/king visit I think to canada in 1939.Not worth much but still a neat piece of history. It is bronze and took alot of cleaning but looks like new! I have had other finds similar to this-just this feeling to check a place and make a good find.

I think it seems the best finds come first. Most likely it's the easy finds that come first. Could be location ( New Sight)..Your more keyed in on the initial hunt.
Your trying out a new detector maybe, and it has a bit more finding power...........than your old detector. The T2 sees targets in the ground many other detectors null out between hits.. ????

But the biggie is..Location, location, and one other thing "LOCATION"..LOL

I have had hunts like that, where it seems that no matter what else you find for the day, it is just gravy. I can't swing all day due to a bum shoulder. After about 3-4 hours I am done. While I am swinging I do like to have that quality factor in there. So I don't think we get sloppy. It would be a waste of our time to get sloppy. Then we would just have to rely on luck. I have also had hunts where you have to sniff out the targets and they don't come until the end of the hunt. As soon as you start digging some good ones, it is time to go. That is what makes us want to go back. because you just never know. That is why we are all addicted. hh

Glad you posted this question. It happens to me on a reguler bases........Dug an Indian head the ither day in about two minutes of the hunt....nothing the rest of the day. Most of my decent finds come very early in the hunt. Why, I dont know.

Evidently, there is some sort of Mental spidey sense that was developed when we used to hunt to eat, and passed down through the gene pool to us.;..Successful Metal detecting is a mental excersize, the rest of it demands physical effort. Just like hunting. Like most hunters in the world, we go early, and later in the day...thats when the "game" is moving..ever think about that? Why is it so hard to concentrate around noon? of course if a fellow hits a sidewalk tear out and theres silver all over the ground, then you gotta buckle down and clean it out since the opportunity is there and short. These "magic wands" just fill a need in us to go and hunt for things, year round, no limits...!

When I think about it, most of my good finds occur in the first hour. Many times within a few minutes of swinging the coil. I am a firm believer in intuition. Don't know or care how it works. Whether its spooky or just the subconcious mind processing information. Just seems to work for me.

When you left your car you were traveling through the heaviest traveled area, and the farther away, the traffic also thinned out ?

As far as what part of the day a good find comes has got to be total randomness, notwithstanding everything else being equal.

Lots of theories, this is just one. Hey, as long as we DO make a good find, or maybe more importantly...enjoy yourself.
