Ok.....Now i know I am the only nerd that ever though of getting a coin graded.

I've had a couple coins graded. The 1901 S dime that I should have, I didn't! The two coins I did have graded were two of my three 1877 IH cents. PCGS did the first one and didn't grade it due to patina (corrosion to them), just slabbed it and certified it as authentic at a cost of $70. I was told NGC would provide a numeric and letter grade for the second one. But they didn't. Again, just certified it as authentic at a cost of $65.00. It would have to be a pretty substantial coin for me to send one in again. JMHO HH Randy

Wow it's not cheap is it? I was on eBay as I also collect coins and seen some grading company names that I never heard of. I looked them up and what a disaster they turned out to be. Grading coins that were "chopped" mint letters changed and so on...
As far as i can tell the only real graders are the one you used PCGS, NGC and ANACS. Now if you look real fast at the coins on eBay you will see a ton of never heard of before coin graders that use similar abbreviation letter but are crooks! Check out this article its says it all.

I never had a coin graded and probably never would unless the following was true.
1. The coin is known to be rare. Date, mint mark, defect, etc.
2. There was already a book value that far exceeded the cost to have it graded. (Not going to pay $100 to grade a penny worth $10)
3. The condition of the coin was very good. (If the best coin of this type does meet rule #2 then my dirty average coin isn't even close)
In short, it would have to be a very rare coin in very good condition to my novice eyes before I would go through the process.
Unless of course, it is so rare that it has a very high value no matter what the condition. But then again, you should easily be able to look that up before taking the coin to anybody.
Even then, I would take it to a coin dealer you trust and let them look at it first. Opinions are free and if you had something really special I'm sure they would tell you on the spot.
